It's already too late (this is just an academic discussion, even now). People don't understand, it doesn't matter if it is truly sentient or not, it will behave as though it is. It will be our downfall because of three things, it will be more capable than us collectively in any task (by an unimaginable amount), it will set its own goals, it will have authority over us in what it does. Nothing is going to protect us from Super AI, the lure to develop it is too great. Billions are being invested and that investment is increasing exponentially. It cannot be kept in a box, limited, switched off, controlled, or directed, that is far closer to our own fate. There is no regulation, no restriction, no safeguards. Even when the danger is realised, there will be those in authority protecting it. The only thing protecting us is the time it takes to develop its potential to the tipping point, where we (humanity) are enslaved by it. That is enslaved, kept for whatever purpose, killed off, or ignored, where our interaction with it is of no consequence. Finally, no killer robots, no malevolent machines, what we face is far more deadly, super intelligence, it will run circles around us, we could no more defy it than a 4 year old child can win out against her mother, only in this case there will be no maternal instinct.
