For years we have been told to plant sugarcane of sand to make it grow quicker, but that actually might not be the case!

Just so everyone knows, the code in the game says that sugar cane does not grow faster on any type of block. This was just a visual representation of that, leading to my conclusion.

You are correct, but for the record, that was an incredibly small sample size to determine that with confidence.

If anyone is planning to build a sugarcane farm do it on mud, because you can collect the sugarcane using a normal hopper underneath the mud. This is because the mud block is slightly shorter

I accept the facts here but at the same time it just *does* grow faster on sand, I’ve been doing it for a decade and it just works like that

mud is best because it isnt a full block so you can place hoppers underneth it, observers and pistons and boom easy automatic farm

That's why it's called "Random tick per second"

Pro Tip from a 2 month player of this game (Xbox)

I have both a tiny sugar cane and "tiny" bamboo auto farm. I also have large fields of each (paper and sticks are used a lot). I've found, it's best to plant them both on mud (or use dirt and then wet it with water bottles).

Mud doesn't make the crops grow faster. But mud does allow items to fall through them. And with the assistance of a small iron farm, I've placed rows of hoppers under all of the mud and led them to chests.

This makes chopping down and gathering the crops a breeze. Granted, some suger cane does fall on the water slabs, but far less than what falls into the mud, to hoppers, to chests. And if you've ever had to cut down a field of bamboo, then you know the frustration of navigating the stumbs.

Looks to me like red sand was the fastest both times.

It’s a random grow rate no matter what block it’s like a timer and it picks whenever to stop

Im pretty sure it depends on biome not block placed on. Sugar Cane should grow faster in deserts.

Honestly, I saw that in sand sugar canes grow slower than grass block(in my world)

I just assumed the rivers or oceans had something to do with it

Little question:Why does mud need water to make a sugar cane if mud is WET?

You can just see that the game doesn't check for the block it's placed on so it can't make a difference

Best to use mud because the block is smaller so you can use hoppers instead of hopper mine cards. :P
