Climbing Walls With RAINBOWS - DIY Gecko Tape

Gecko are amazing creature that have an incredible climbing ability thanks to the use of nano structures on their feet. Scientists have since replicated these structures artificially and made rolls of tape with the same magical sticky properties are a gecko foot. But making these tapes is normally and expensive and difficult undertaking. In this video we explore a simple method to make gecko tape that if made correctly could hold upwards of 100 lbs.

The base you set the silicon on matters. Having the base soft and semi round allows the best surface attachment!

Hey, try using wood for the bracket, and a wood planisher to make it as smooth and flat as possible, and do the same thing to the stable piece. Maybe that will help.

The gecko tape ive seen used a flexible backing. might work a little better and allow more surface area to touch

you should embed 2 or 3 sheets of 0, 2mm glassfiber matt into the silicone and let a bit of the matt outside of the silicone so you can then glue a handle with epoxy to it

You might try a sheet of cloth rather than acrylic for the gecko sheet backing- it should act as a load spreader, but still flex to allow full contact.

You need a way to deform the pad as it's making contact so that the ridges moves apart a bit and then. Kinda like reverse peeling if you know what I mean.

I don't know much about light but isn't the visible spectrum we see in a lower frequency compared to ultraviolet? What if you used a diffraction grading for that? Or, similarly, in case it is difficult to come by something like that, use an ultraviolet light on something that would take on the texture of the light. (Not sure how a diffraction grating is made but...) Then you can pour silicone on your ultraviolet diffraction grating to get theoretically more ridges?

the problem is, that when you stretch the silicone, it stops being rainbowy and geckoy.
- You need something that does not stretch, and has a soft padding before the hair .... kind of like a gecko feet :D
- ALSO: the point is that it sticks to ANYTHING not just flat 'glass' - we already have suction cups that can do that fine. - hence the soft padding, and probably smaller hairs.

what type of silicone did you use? what was its hardness rating. im assuming that because of the size of the grooves the firmness matters quites a bit. if its too soft they'll just be floppy and useless but too firm and they wont bend enough to stick right

Check out the new video from Applied Science, he did hologram chocolate and Maybe found a way to fix the issue? Make the silicone envelope the sheet instead of pouring it onto the sheet, as well as purge vac.
Too bad silicone is so damn expensive.
