Part 1 building a 600hp SBC 400

I start with a power wash and rod clearance mock up on this .040 over 400 #smallblock #406 #421 #600hp

Back in 2003 I built a 400 2 bolt. Solid roller, lots of compression. A pair of pro topline 235 23* heads that I spent over 50 hours on. On my buddies new land and sea Dyno, it made 719 hp! Yes those heads were cast iron. And I ran a Edelbrock tunnel ram with a pair of 750 4150's

Just picked up a standard bore 511 block. Great to see the 400 getting some love.

ALWAYS use a wire/coat hanger to get in the bottom of the water jackets. Sometimes there could be a couple inches of rusty crap down at the bottom of the cylinders.
You'd be surprised how much comes out, if that's never been done.

My dad used to build 421 stokers for late model dirt cars 30 years ago made over 600hp. Last one he built back then still runs to this day. Nothing like sound of fast reving high hp sbc that can run dang near wide open for 100 laps straight. You got to grind out the block to clear those bolts for sure. Glad I am lucky enough to learn all this stuff hands on from him. I’m about to build a stroked 350 and I’ll be having to grind all of them 🤣

Part 2? building a 406 myself for 6" rods. Was wanting more in depth of cutting for cyl 7, 8

You guys ever worry about the crank getter by bent when it’s shipped to you? Think I’d have the machine shop check it for straightness when they balance the rotating sheet system.

Not surprised at all, wasn't no problem, 200 cc intake heads, .600 or over on cam, instant 600hp on about any well built 400

With the 400 did u make all the oil and water holes are bigger than factory, and get a better water pump a low degree thermostat and high performance pil pump bc if not that thin is 100% gonna overheat or something man

Looks like you kept the steam holes on your 400 covered my steam holes at the machine shop I went to ....Is it bad to cover them up
