What is INTERPOL? INTERPOL (The International Criminal Police Organization) is not what you think of as a traditional police or law enforcement organization. INTERPOL does not have police officers or law enforcement agents in its employ that go out and arrest suspects. It is an international organization, with member States (which are countries). INTERPOL is based in France, and, according to its Constitution, has a General Assembly whose delegates are the member States.
Interpol has 194 member countries, including authoritarian, repressive countries known to use Interpol Red Notices as a means of persecuting dissidents, including Egypt, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey and Venezuela, among others.
An INTERPOL red notice is an “international wanted person notice, but not an arrest warrant” according to INTERPOL’s web site. Red Notices are published by INTERPOL at the request of a member country
While Interpol’s work is valuable in bringing international fugitives to justice, it is also used as a tool for persecution
