Samsung QN85A Neo QLED - Better than expected? + QN90A

The Samsung QN85A Neo QLED is already a hot button mini-LED 4k TV. There have been mixed reviews, so I thought I would review it and put it against the QN90A in order to really see the similarities and differences for 80% the cost of the QN90A at launch. Will conditions and content matter or will the better TV just come down to the price? what about using an IPS panel instead of a VA panel for Samsung TVs? Just bought the QN85a in a 65 inch for $1599.00. Excellent tv outstanding brightness and we watch from directly in front of it so we are really pleased. Best tv we have had.

I agree with your review. I saw the QN85A from a straight on position 2 days ago and it was right below the QN90A, I told the employee that I thought the QN85A looked better even though the 85A has an IPS panel. I am hesitant with Samsung though because of DSE.

I don't know whether this is important or not, but in the viewing angle comparison because of the position of the sets, (one above the other), the qn85 was observed at a much more increased vertical angle than the qn90a. I my experience a lot of IPS-type panels tend to degrade at a combination of both angles, yet can be fine in the purely horizontal plane and even the purely vertical one also. I haven't as much experience with VA panels, but it would be interesting to observe the qn90a at the same angle to see whether there is the same increase in blooming etc.

i just got the 85A for 1g on black Friday from the Samsung app- it was $500 off vs $300 off for the 90A i saw very few differences between the two on best buy comparison & kept hoping i didn’t make a mistake or miss something but after watching your review i’m so happy i got the more inexpensive one! so stoked can’t wait to get it delivered - thanks so much for this comparison! i’m grateful😁✌🏼

I was also surprised by the picture on the QN85A, Rtings mention that is ADS panel which is similar to IPS, but everything you said about viewing angles is true, the best way to watch TV is in front.

So I'm bouncing between 85" QN90A vs 85" QN85A. Price difference with a deal going on is only about $150 more for the QN90A, and it has ATSC 3.0, supposedly better, etc.. BUT, when I checked out a comparison at best buy, i liked the QN85 85" better next to a QN90A 75" side by side. Yes, 85" is always nicer than 75", but both being VA panels (QN85 at 85" goes from IPS to VA), it seemed like a little closer apple to apple comparison, even with the size difference. Wish I could see an QN85 and a QN90 at 85" side by side.

QN85A has an IPS panel and the QN90A has got a VA panel.
I would choose the QN90A because of the better contrast with the VA panel.
