This is a preview lesson from John Goldsby's new course 'Tell Your Story: Soloing concepts for the jazz bassist'. It's designed to help intermediate and advanced level bassists learn new ways to improvise and tell their story!

LESSON NOTES:
Acclaimed bassist and educator, John Goldsby explains how you can use chord guide tones to help create jazz bass solos. He starts by demonstrating guide tones he's picked out for popular standard, Autumn Leaves, and then shows how you can use them to build your solo. You can follow along with the lesson by downloading the free sheet music transcription.

Definition: Guide tones are typically the notes which define the character of a chord, such as the 3rd or 7th, or upper partials like the 11th, 9th, and 13th. A melodic line can be formed by linking guide tones in a chord sequence.
