Bangkok is full of amazing buildings, but to us, none stands out more than the Robot Building on South Satorn Road. Designed by Sumet Jumsai and built in 1987, the building originally housed the Bangkok Headquarters for the Bank of Asia, but today houses the United Overseas Bank. When it was first built the Robot Building stood out in Bangkok, despite being just 20 stories high, and today, despite being dwarfed, it still stands out as unique in the heart of Bangkok's financial district.

While modern architecture isn't always looked on with the most positive critiques, this building feels special, it feels elevated. The design of Sumet Jumsai is well-considered and elegant while also being whimsical. When you see the Robot building from the window of the BTS line as you ride by, you can't help but smile.

When you visit Bangkok, you owe it to yourself to visit the Robot Building and smile at it's place in Bangkok, Thailand.

A while back I watched a terrific Thai movie "Pop Aye". It's about a successful Bangkok architect who discovers a show elephant he knows. The architect frees the elephant and walks it up to Isaan to release the beast. It's a lovely story that really captures a lot about Thailand. When I saw Sumet Jungsai in your video, I immediately remembered "Pop Aye". I wonder if there's a connection.
