Father Time - Sammy Hagar & The Circle (Official Music Video)

"When I first wrote Father Time, I kept it from everyone because it was so personal that I’d get too choked up to actually sing it. I wrote it just after turning 70 while I was at our then home in Maui. That house was my sanctuary in the middle of the jungle, overlooking the ocean-- it was just paradise. The words ‘Father Time’s over there looking over my shoulder’ just kept going through my head, so I picked up my guitar and the rest of the song just came spilling out. I turned on my iPhone and recorded it. I cried my eyes out after I wrote and played it back. It’s probably the most personal song that I’ve ever written and now, after just turning 75, I’m finally ready to release it." – Sammy

LYRICS

Father time is over there.
Looking over my shoulder.
I'm here soaking up the sun and thinking I ain't gettin’ no younger.
Crashing waves clawing at the shore.
That’s been going on forever and more.
There's something about the sun in Mexico that burns different.

And this island smells familiar.
Don’t remember what I can't forget.
Still living this dream and it ain't over yet.
Ain’t over yet.

Married young.
Worked hard to raise four children.
Played every bar in every small town that would have me.
Then I met a record man that signed me. Said he liked the way my star was shining.
Hit the road.
Man, that's no place to start a family.

But that highway looks familiar.
Don't remember what I can't confess.
Still live in this dream and it ain't over yet.

When was the last time.
We did something for the first time, baby?
It's been a long, long time.
Uh huhhhhh.
Uh huhhhhh.
It's been a long, long time, baby.
It's been a long, long time.
Uh huhhhhh.

Hard right to the head, left hook to the body.
Ain't nobody going down, but they sure taking a beating.
And the songs we sing won't change it.
No matter how loud we play it.
I can see it.
I just don't know what to do about it.

Yeah, and history looks familiar.
Don't remember but we can't forget.
Still living this dream, and it ain't over yet.
Still living the dream, and it ain't over yet.
It ain't over yet.
And father time is over there.
Looking over my shoulder.

I sat down tonight to write a song about my fathers life and about the good times we had. He was diagnosed with lung cancer a few days ago. His 3rd time facing this battle that he beat twice before. He turns 87 this coming Sunday. I put my guitar down to take a break with tears rolling down my face and to gather my thoughts and I thought of this song. Don’t know why, but it just came to me and ya know what, it ain’t over yet. Keep the faith.

I grew up with your music
I danced to your music
Now I hear your voice
And it's like back then
My dear old friend
advises me...
Let eagles fly!

Sammy, you have earned your mark on the world for your music. We've been together for close to 50 years and you have never sounded better. Love this song, we know you love to have fun but you still are one of the very best at writing and singing ballads. Thank you so much for the music all these years. You and your music are part of my soul. Don't ever stop the music. Thank you for sharing the memories of your magical life and career. This song invokes such emotions from smiles to tears. Thank you!

I sat in the first 10 rows at the Van Halen Balance Concert in 1995, Cleveland, OH. Last concert in that facility before it was torn down I was 13 years old. I was hooked. It was amazing. Sammy sounded so good. I have seen him in every band he has been in ever since. Here we are 27 years later. Still love everything he does. I was a 13 year old kid watching a 40 year old guy sing his heart out, never giving any thought to being 40. Here I am at 40 and he is in his 70's. Life is a funny thing.
