Both have their skills and benefits and excitement. Just different really not better or worse, all in perspective.

Mountain biking is ice hockey (constant ultra hard to coasting efforts changing quickly), road cycling is speed skating (far more steady state power). Same basic skill set applied very differently and impacting the body and our systems differently.

They are different disciplines with different skills. For example, more arm strength and stamina needed for mountain biking, but those arms are mainly dead weight on the road, whereas a pure Roady would have very sore and tired arms after a MTB session.

I remember going mountain biking with my friend thinking it would be chill. Man my heart rate was thru the roof lol and it’s more fun than regular biking. Mountain biking my legs were burning and I barely finished the small trail. Uphill is hard

I do both mountain biking and road biking and I will say this; mountain biking makes me a better road cyclist. Also riding 50 mph down and mountain road is not as scary as 25 mph down twisty, rocky and rooty singletrack.

MTB miles are twice as hard as road bike miles!

Mntn bike scene is super chill, welcoming and more about the fun. Road biking gets more serious and competative. Mntn biking groups stick together and wait for eachother. Road biking, waiting for slower people sucks. I love em both!

You dont mind so much waiting for people when youre in the middle of a pretty and quiet forest. Sitting waiting on the side of a road with cars flying by isnt so much fun.

both are hard but the hardest thing could be getting your mountain bike to a long distance ride while your buddies got ridebike and you gotta keep up :)
Roadbike cannot be taken on mountain bike

The same goes for mtb, depending on the trails you choose you can make it as hard as you want

As a road cyclist I have the deapest repect for mountainbikers, they need strength and endurance going up, and endurance, extreme skill and reflexes and strong arms going down. I probably dont have the guts for it anyhow.

I ride both. Road biking is easier to me. Less technical. Lighter bike.

Mountain biking is oviously harder cause its about handling while road cycling is more about efficiency
Just my opinion based on experience 😅

Mountain biking is a broad term. For me mtb is cycling on surfaces that are not tarmac. As a triathlete, I use mtb as a way to get some anaerobic power training during hot months and to maintain my fitness during cold months. I use a mtb 2-3 times per month, while the rest of my training is on a road bike on tarmac or on a smart trainer. I also use my mtb to do some trips with my kids, far from traffic.

The big difference is road cycling needs team work. Mtb on the other hand is more on bike handling. Both are endurance sports but road requires you to plan your nutrition mid race. In MTB, if you bonk you are done. In road you can recover in the peloton.

Hate riding with cars passing by or waiting for me... Also, love getting lost from everything with my mtb... I've discovered lots of beautiful places with my MTB that i would have never found if i had ridden always on pavement...

both are cool In their respective rights but nothing like covering 115 miles to the coast and getting the train back it’s just beauty

Road cycling you change the pace and you good to go. On MTB you gotta do what the terrain dictates. You dont make it harder while riding, but you can chose what to ride and setup the level that way.

I ride both. Both are as hard or as easy as you want them to be

Mtn is harder mile for mile but there are things you can’t do on a mtn bike that you can on a road that make it different. It’s not that hard to bike for 3 hours road and get a 50-60 mile ride. Try doing 3 hours mountain and you’re probably burning 2x the calories mile per mile, but you aren’t able to go 25-30 miles so road gives you a better workout on the heart
