What is an Oldham coupling?
Share: Oldham couplings are three-piece flexible shaft couplings that are used to connect driving and driven shafts in mechanical power transmission assemblies. Flexible shaft couplings are used to counter the inevitable misalignment that occurs between connected shafts and, in some cases, to absorb shock
What is the function of coupling?
The basic function of all couplings is to transmit power, accommodate misalignment and compensate for axial movement (end movement of shafts). Sometimes, a coupling is asked to absorb shock or vibration. Selecting the right coupling depends on four basic conditions of shaft misalignment or movement.
What is the use of Oldham coupling?
Oldham couplings transmit torque by mating the slots on the center disk to the drive tenons on the hubs. They accommodate angular and axial misalignment, and are especially useful in applications where parallel misalignment is present.
Where is coupling used?
A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both.
What are the advantages of flexible coupling?
A flexible coupling can accommodate a slight misalignment between shafts (up to 0.5-degree angular misalignment and 5 mm axial misalignment) but a rigid coupling cannot tolerate any such misalignment. Examples of rigid coupling muff coupling, clamp coupling, rigid flange coupling etc.
What are the applications of universal coupling?
Universal joint is a positive mechanical joint used for connecting shafts, whose axes are inclined at an angle to each other. It is also known as universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan Joint and Hooke's Joint. It compensates angular misalignment between the shafts in any direction
Working principle of oldham coupling:
When three disc, one disc coupled to input of shaft connect and another disc coupled to output of torque. ... The spring is used to this mechanism for reduce the coupling backlash. During power transmission of one drive to another, the center disc is slide on torque of each hub.
