In 1997, mobile network operator Safaricom was a fully owned subsidiary of Telkom Kenya. In May 2000, U.K operator Vodafone acquired a 40 percent stake and management responsibility for the company. Today Safaricom is the most profitable company in Kenya and the region. But what foundation was laid for the kind of success it enjoys today?
