I was diagnosed with ADD (now called ADHD inattentive type) in the 90s. I was called “lazy”, “unmotivated” and other things for years even with medication and support. My dissertation was by far the hardest to get motivated to complete. I wish there was more respect for these barriers.

I believe I’m undiagnosed. This is how I feel daily

Protip: set monumental goals to reach normal levels. Put on Hans Zimmer Soundtracks while cleaning the room so it feels like you're on a mission to save the planet.

Approval and praise change my motivation levels drastically. Gets one out of the extreme guilt mode which I belive is part of the problem. Creates anxiety and paralysis ( mental)

Dr., I just want to say the greatest thank you for what you do in explaining all of this. Knowledge IS powerful and provides a sense of relief that I'm not a horrible human being. I was diagnosed in 2006 as an adult and I've never had professionals explain any of this.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I love that you said "brain derived motivation". Because it messed me up hearing all the time that my family should be enough motivation, wanting a good job or to graduate college should be enough motivation, caring about making my ex happy should be enough motivation, etc.

This is why it's wrong when they tell you to not disclose at work.

It's actually painful for me to do some things. And the same when I hyper focus. I actually feel discomfort when I have to stop.

It's like I'm being self punished for doing the stuff I know I need to do.

And I have BPD as well so both extremes can have me looking like 2 different people. Hyper focus+ hypomania= temporary superhuman abilities 😂

its so difficult to find that balance between making sure you have enough responsibility to motivate you, but not too much to overwhelm you and thus demotivate you.

This has been my week. I have a “soft” diagnosis and off-label medication (bupropion), but I feel like it only does so much. Especially coming back from a break this whole week has felt totally unproductive and overwhelming.

Anyone found tools / systems to help you break the inertia?
I keep trying different things but always end up falling back on the unhealthy tried-and-true procrastinate until the very last minute (often accompanied with an all-nighter to meet project deadlines).

I've been self medicating for years and because of that, even though I'm diagnose, no doctor will prescribe me anything and now I'm stuck in this vicious cycle.

Stuck in a mindspace is how I've tried to explain it to my workaholic dad who can't sit down for 2 seconds without starting on a new task or project or chore. At any given time I've got like 6 different things I need to or want to be doing but I'm lucky if I manage to squeeze one of them out during the day.

@DrTraceyMarks Thanks for this video. Discipline and shaming are not effective. Do you have any strategies on how to motivate a teen with this ADHD brain who is not self motivated?
