Bell Ringing at Acton, Greater London

St Mary's Church in Acton hang a ring of eight in a stable condition, hung on plain bearings. This makes the bells hard to ring and very challenging. Nonetheless, the bells sound okay and when pushed are very musical. They were cast by John Warner & Sons, Thomas II Mears, James (L) Bagley, and Ellis I Knight.

I was kindly invited to ring here by James White who is the tower captain here. He kindly let me ring the tenor to Stedman Triples, Grandsire Triples and ringing all eight down in peal. I would happily ring here again. The church has a Victorian presence to it which I like. Here is a clip of a course of Cambridge Surprise Major recorded at the Middlesex Guild South and West District general ringing practice. Enjoy!

A nice proper old fashioned ring of 8! London is full of rings like these. I don't know why, but in some ways I prefer the quirky older rings to more modern ones - Although I did ring at a really nice set of 6 last week that where re hung in 2019 which sound amazing!

I like the mournful sound that they give off.
