4 Days Paragliding & Camping | Northern Pakistan Karakoram

The second installment from our trip to Pakistan in the 2024 summer.

After an epic start to our vol-biv (fly & camp) adventure in Northern Pakistan, we used the last 4 days to paraglide south towards Islamabad, saving half the drive back to the airport. Our plan was to fly over Spantik, but an unexpected headwind forced a detour. Instead, we soared around Rakaposhi, camped near Nanga Parbat, we then managed to fly over the Babusar Top Pass, landing along the highway leading to the capital.

This was true adventure flying, just paragliders, mountains, and our tents. With all our camping gear inside our harnesses, we moved entirely by air and foot, covering vast distances in some of the world’s most breathtaking terrain.

Oh man, it's very inspiring! The movie creates an impression of accessible and chill flying (aside from the fast top landings). There should be a 1.5h directors cut of this trip to really let us get to know Pakistan's mountains and then maybe another 1.5h on the logistics of the trip...and then the 3rd part...and then....

I've flown in these areas for quite some time. As an airline pilot, we used to conduct extensive preflight planning, considering factors like unpredictable weather patterns, available escape routes in case of an engine failure, pressurization loss, and other contingencies. Even with all this preparation, we still had the advantage of onboard avionics, weather radar, multiple redundancies, and a structured emergency protocol.

In contrast, paragliding offers none of these luxuries—no powered thrust to escape adverse conditions, no onboard weather data, no automated flight control systems, and minimal room for error when encountering turbulence or strong downdrafts. The ability to read microclimates, utilize thermals efficiently, and make split-second decisions based purely on visual cues and experience is truly commendable. I can only imagine how challenging it must be to navigate those same skies with nothing but a canopy and skill.
