The Chetniks of Mihailović: When Revenge Turned into Genocide
During the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, Dragoljub Mihailović, leader of the Serbian nationalists, spiraled into a campaign of terror and ethnic cleansing. Driven by the dream of a greater Serbia, he ordered his troops to exterminate Muslims and Croats in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Srem. While the brutal killings of the Chetniks were a response to the atrocities committed by the Ustaše, the Croatian fascist movement, Mihailović's quest for vengeance unleashed a large-scale genocide.
It is estimated that his forces killed around 65,000 people and burned over 300 villages. Mihailović didn't just target civilians; he also waged a terror campaign against communist partisans and the puppet government of Milan. His black troops infiltrated enemy lines to eliminate perceived traitors.
