Anticipation (Singer: Carly Simon)

We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway
And I wonder if I'm really with you now
Or just chasin' after some finer day

Anticipation
Anticipation
Is makin' me late
Is keepin' me waitin'

And I tell you how easy it feels to be with you
How right your arms feel around me
But I, I rehearsed those words just late last night
When I was thinkin' about how right tonight might be

Anticipation
Anticipation
Is makin' me late
Is keepin' me waitin'

And tomorrow we might not be together
I'm no prophet, Lord, I don't know nature's ways
So I'll try see into your eyes right now
And stay right here
'Cause these are the good old days

These are the good old days
And stay right here
'Cause these are the good old days
These are the good old days

These are the good old days
These are the good old days
These are the good old days

Wikipedia states:

"Anticipation" is a song written and performed by Carly Simon, and the lead single from her 1971 album of the same name. The song peaked at number 13 on the Billboard pop singles chart and at number 3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The song ranked number 72 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1972, and garnered Simon a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Female Vocalist. Simon wrote the song on the guitar in 15 minutes, as she awaited Cat Stevens to pick her up for a date.

"Anticipation" is one of Simon's biggest hits. It has been included on several compilations of her work, including The Best of Carly Simon (1975). The song was used in commercials for Heinz Ketchup through the late 1970s into the 1980s. Saturday Night Live used the song in a similar fashion for its mock commercial for "Swill Mineral Water."

Stephen Davis, writing for Rolling Stone, stated "Anticipation is a spirited examination of the tensions involved in a burgeoning romantic situation in which nobody has any idea of what's going on or what's going to happen." He continued "Carly's fine, aggressive vocal is complemented by Paul Glanz' lyrical piano comping, and drummer Andy Newmark's rhythms are to the point. The cut winds up with a surprising coda crescendo that pithily wraps up the premise of the message about anticipating things to come-Stay right here, 'cause these are the good old days".

AllMusic reviewer Joe Viglione said of the track, "In retrospect the song (and the album) are among Carly's finest." And concluded "'Anticipation' was more than a great melody and performance, it became a pivotal bridge and foundation for fifteen years of hits."

Writing in Rolling Stone, Stephen Davis gave a glowing review of the album. He called the title-track "a spirited examination of the tensions involved in a burgeoning romantic situation in which nobody has any idea of what's going on or what's going to happen." Davis continued by calling "Our First Day Together", "...a quiet song, lovely and quite enigmatic, with a trace of the minor chord influence of Joni Mitchell." He concluded by calling "I've Got To Have You", "an ...absolute clincher, an awesome description of the psychic ravages of gone-nuts, know-nothing love." He continued by saying, "...as Carly performs it, it becomes a tour de force, and a stern reminder to those of us who might have forgotten that passion is the ruler of man, not reason. When Carly moans 'I can't help it ... I've got to have you,' we're being shown something so primal and so private that it takes your breath away."
