They’re not desperate in that they don’t know what to do next. They know exactly what they’re doing, and it’s creativity bankrupt. The variety of output from Disney has only been shrinking since Bob Iger stepped in twenty years ago, and until he’s supposedly done next year, he’ll be continuing to use the exact same strategy. Look at what’s previously made money, and do more of that. Except that’s not creativity, it’s just trying to stay as far away from actual inspiration as possible.

This is mostly about Pixar: I hate that people act like they are only doing sequels now... From 2010 till 2019, they had 7 sequels/prequels and 4 originals. So 63% franchise movies.
From 2020 till 2026(because we know their slate till then) we got 3 sequels/spin-offs and 7 originals. So 70% original movies. (With most of them having good reception). And it's not like this changing. the next 2 movies are original and we know they are working on more. 3 sequels(Toy Story 5 etc) is risk averse of course, but not like it's any different than before.

(WDA on the other hand does have a problem, which I hope Jared Bush is able to fix in his new role as head of WDA)

What would've been a straight to DVD movie 30 years ago is now being treated as a true cinematic experience.

I say this as a Disney/Pixar fan: they’re really freaking pushing it now. I think this is the last straw on the camel’s back for me. It’s not enough to give Frozen an actual tetralogy, Toy Story yet another film coming off of what was already a poor sequel imo, and now a sequel for Coco?! Bro what do you even do with a Coco 2? Coco’s one of my most favorites of the studio, and I just don’t know or see how you’d even make a worthy sequel to it 💀 it feels like Disney is enacting their actual plans years ago of making the straight to DVD sequels for everything.

2:01 no way strange world has 72 on rotten tomatoes. It should be lower than that

Probably largely due to the enormous success of Inside Out 2.
I miss when Pixar would do amazing original after amazing original. They don't have the talent anymore ☹

Pixar is still making plenty of originals, and their sequels are usually good. People are overreacting because the industry as a whole is making too many unnecessary sequels and spinoffs. For me, Pixar still has the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe both. Coco getting a sequel as long after the original is a bit interesting especially considering the original film will be what 11 years old by the time the sequel comes out. Could be wrong but I don't think it was ever stated that Coco 1 would be a one off

Coco 2 and Encanto 2 could be as great as their predecessors Disney is mostly better at sequels now than they were so I'm hyped!

(PLEASE NO MORE!)Walt always tried to do something new, and experiment and takes risks, look where that got him, this is an antithetis to that....

Coco 2 is not at all a forced idea. And I’ve actually been wanting Encanto 2. We love these franchises and it’s better to have (consistent) sequels to expand the world than going back to the same thing we don’t need to. As long as they don’t take too long for their sequels. (Also I’m down for 8 more Incredibles sequels)

Coco is a Pixar film that does not need a sequel. They are desperate. If they're gonna go the sequel route, go with The Incredibles 3 or A Bug's Life 2. 😂 Not Coco's story that's tied with a bow.

If the sequels were being announced alongside an equal number of new original ideas, it would be a healthy balance for audiences. But the studio hasn't greenlit any original movies past Hoppers, which comes out early next year. We could be looking at a five-year long era of exclusively sequels.

i hate when people get mad when disney makes a sequel then when they make an original movie they either dont give it a chance or they complain about it

They want to make live action their focus. This is why they are making garbage movies.
