Yanis Varoufakis on Germany’s Election Scam

preview_player

In this video, Yanis Varoufakis lays bare what’s really at stake in Germany’s upcoming election:

- How the country’s economic collapse is deliberately engineered by its elites
- Why this election is just a cosmetic reshuffling of the same failed policies
- The deepening authoritarianism of the German state
- Why MERA25 is the only real force fighting for change

Germany votes this Sunday—but don’t be fooled. A new chancellor will take office, but the playbook remains unchanged: austerity for the many, money printing for the few, and a relentless march toward deindustrialisation.

At the same time, the state escalates its crackdown on dissent, silencing those who challenge the status quo—before the far-right AfD even gets close to "power." The establishment parties will continue serving the oligarchy, tightening their grip while pretending to offer change.

The system won’t fix itself. It’s up to us to overthrow it.

Just a small comment on Varoufakis calling the German Leftist party "not particularly lefty": I don't dispute that there are aspects in their agenda where you can make this point. However, if we define "true leftists" in a way that it essentially will engender 0.5% or whatever of the electorate, we have a problem. And not a small one. The political left wants to speak for the masses. If it fails to do so it better be a bit self-critical and maybe question its definition of "leftism". It is a phenomenal success that the Leftist party - which was essentially dead a year ago - is now polling at 7 percent. Still marginal, but not as marginal as smaller, more radical socialist parties.

It’s so fucking frustrating as a German to see the centrist parties here do everything they can to ensure the survival of the centre, at any cost, which itself is destroying democracy…

Germany should have known that US will throw them under the bus. US policy is allways USA first no matter what it takes.

I really respect Yanis but calling Die Linke "not particularly leftist" is just unfair. They've been bad on the genocide in Gaza, yes (meaning, not clear enough in condemning, as opposed to all the other parties who just actively support it). Their economic policies though are really quite left-wing. They support price controls for food and rent, disappropriation of rental corporations, and their taxation plans for the super rich would mean a real significant redistribution of wealth and power. Their anti-militarism is about as good as you're gonna get in the global north and they're really not class-reductionist, too. Yes, they don't advocate violent revolution. But if that's what you need to be called a leftist than we're really not talking about a movement with a broad based perspective in the near future anyway.

So, respectfully, as leftists, let's focus on the similarities we have with each other. And let's push Die Linke to be better on Palestine. There's clear signs that it's possible. They already oppose giving weapons to Israel and obviously support arresting Netanyahu if he comes to Germany. Also, Ferat Koçak, a Kurdish German pro-Palestinian activist just won the first ever direct mandate for die Linke within the borders of former West Germany. He's also one of the people who made most of the bad Zionists like Klaus Lederer thankfully quit the party a few months ago.

Die Linke has a good momentum going right now. They even won first-time voters and under 25s outright, their membership numbers are exploding, and yet they're really not conciliatory towards the centre and give up nothing of their radicalism on economic issues. It's frankly really refreshing and encouraging that an actual left is anything but dead in Germany. Let's carry that forward.

Germany never responded when the US blew up the NordStream pipeline, what else can be said about vasseldom.

The EU has transferred European manufacturing to China, now China has more money than they know what to do with and Europe is sinking in debt. Who would have predicted that

I may not agree on everything with Yanis Varoufakis but he is one of most honest politicians in Europe

The Dutch government also denied Francesca Albanese from talking to them in The Hague. It's a disgrace since the Court of Justice is in the same city!

Varoufakis appears to be one of the few people making an honest analysis of the abyss our world is slipping into..How do we help empower this

Hmmm, German here. Mr Varoufakis has a lot of great insights into politics and economics - especially with his concept of techno feudalism - but this video is a complete miss for me. It sounds like somebody got their feelings hurt and wanted to strike out.
For one, it seems strange to completely ignore efforts made by the SPD/Greens part of the still current government (despite the massive roadblocks put in their path by the third party in this coaltion, the FDP, which will, thankfully, most likely be rewarded for their scheming a**hole behaviour with a loss of a large percantage of their previous vote share - good riddance!). Has the SPD as junior partner in the Merkel governments made massive mistakes? You bet. But they made efforts to turn the tanker that is the German state around when they were leading a government, despite being hobbled by CoViD, the war in Ukraine, and their own coalition partner.
Second, the Berlin police is under the direction of the Berlin mayor, a CDU guy. His actions reflect his actions not the general state of democracy in the country.
Third, it's easy to trash everyone - "all those up there" - that's, after all, how the neofascists are getting most of their votes. I'd expect better from Mr. Varoufakis than just leave it at "None of the parties are left enough. It's all a big scam." Name a party that at this point in time stands a chance to enter the parliament to push the government (in my honest opinion, more likely to be CDU/AfD but maybe I've become cynical) to work for the people and not the billionaire class. Because I don't see just throwing my hands up as a sustainable way forward.

Spiegel reports that the in-person event was canceled by the university (albeit under pressure of the major of Berlin) and not directly by the police. Furthermore, the streaming of the event from another site to the main auditorium in which it should have taken place was not hindered by the police. I understand that the decision of the university to cancel the event can and should be criticised, but this portrayal as actions of an "authoritarian police state" are exaggerated and not helpful. Or is Spiegel lying?

It was a beautiful day with lectures (including by Francesca Albanese), documentaries, speeches, classical music and empathy and solidarity! Followed the entire streaming of the event, - thank you, all❤️📢

As a German, I'm terrified by the shutdown of freedom in Germany. Thanks for exposing all this very clearly. I hope people will wake up before it will be too late.

The sad thing is that the leftist party is currently still the most left leaning party that has any chance of entering the parliament currently. This is why I will vote for them. But the backlash against them is ridiculous, they are seriously called „radical“ by our public television channels. Their program is a lot of things, but not radical. It’s actually very realistic and common sense, and their policies are the only ones among the major parties that would actually help lower and middle class people as well as bring more money into the states pocket and support investment. They are very transparent about how they want to achieve their goals. Whereas the conservatives just bullshit their way through these questions and the media lets them, proving once again that the questions about monetary feasibility are only relevant to put down progressive policies but don’t matter at all when it comes to inhumane conservatives.
Friedrich Merz as chancellor is very scary to me. Anyway, in case someone wants to have a little laugh and maybe learn a thing or two about this horrible man - and also understands German - you could play „Merz gegen alle“ - a mobile game published two days ago that uses a game to reveal the policies and personality of Friedrich Merz and what would happen if he got his way. I hope it reaches some people who would otherwise have voted for him.

Good morning,
thank you Mr. Varoufakis! I am afraid you are absolutely right. But how can we change this Desaster? I am very sad to see this happen but I don't have a clue.... What can we do? 🤝
