Home composting is actually easy and many people hesitate to start composting in their limited space garden. In today's video, let’s learn step by step – how to easily, quickly and successfully make smell free, aerobic compost at home from kitchen waste with some very useful tips and tricks.

In our previous three episodes we discussed on the fundamentals of composting including Types, the CN ratio and demonstrated the anaerobic or bokashi composting method step by step. You can find links to those episodes below.

In Today’s episode, let’s learn How to perfectly make compost at home in 5 easy steps:

1. CHOOSING COMPOST BIN: 0:48

There are many ways to compost. You can either use an open pile composting method or use a compost bin. Open pile method or using a simple chicken mesh boundary is the simplest way to start, but it has its own disadvantages. The best way to compost at home is use a compost bin. Bins have the advantage of being neat, keeping animals, rodents and insects away and preserving heat. You can build your own DIY compost bin from some plastic buckets or even drums or barrels. You can even build a tumbling compost bin. We will show you how to make a compost bin in another detailed episode.

2. CHOOSING THE LOCATION: 2:11
For conventional pile compost method, a sunny location and a flat surface on soil is better. For drum compost making or if using a tumbling composter this is not so crucial.

3. ADDING GREENS AND BROWNS: 2:41

This we have discussed in detail in episode 2 of our composting series.

GREEN TO BROWN RATIO : 4:10

4. COMPOST STARTER POWDER or ACCELERATOR: 4:36
If you are starting for the first time or first batch, you need to add those microorgansisms to start the composting process. This can be either a commercial compost maker powder or a half finished compost or even a fully finished compost or decomposed cowdung can be added as a starter.

5. MATURATION AND HARVESTING COMPOST: 5:32

when the bin is 70 to 80% full, stop adding further waste into it and leave it for 6 to 8 weeks for compost cooking and final maturation.

I saw all your 4 episodes on composting, you have explained it very well and systematically. Since I segregate my house waste, I wanted to do my composting but I don't have carbon waste in adequate quantity to maintain C:N ratio. But thank you anyways. It's always good to stay updated.

Thanks for all the informative videos, Doctor.
What could be the reason for maggots in the compost bin. Well, my compost pile is teeming with them. Are they good or bad for the composting process?
Could you please share the name of the brand of starter used by you for aerobic composting please. Thanks in advance.

Thanks very much for this composting series. I follow your videos regularly and they are of utmost help. I have an enquiry, if you please, a thick almost black liquid has dripped in the container under my compost bin. As it's a very rich liquid fertilizer I've saved it to use for plants but there are some larvas in it! My question is can I use this liquid after straining it? And what should be the ratio? The liquid is very thick!
I value your opinion!
