👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Being just alone, I bursted into a loud laugh about the "reason" for communication problems between Ariane and James Webb Space Telescope. The realization that James Webb is speaking English, while Ariane speaks French. Such perfect match with my sense of humor!

Last week, here in New Zealand, I got to see all the great discoveries of Galileo on one night :)) Venus was a fingernail, the mountains on the crescent Moon, the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. What a treat!

Good job, Editing Becky. Those silent dark frames with block letters really conveyed your feelings about JWST launch, probably as well as any live video could have done.

The fact that there's an ISS pass scheduled for Christmas Day is a wonderful event for parents of young children. Doesn't matter that it's the ISS, it can be Santa to them.

Joined for the dark matter conversation but all I could focus on was the Christmas themed nasa sweater and the beautiful Christmas tree. Lovely start to my morning

Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the three planets are in reverse order in the sky. Weird looking at the northern view.

In the meanwhile, I'll be praying for JWST to have a safe launch and flight out to L2.

Hearing Dr. Becky talk about the Quadrantids Meteor Shower reminds me of the song Stand by R. E. M.
"Stand in the place where you live. Now face north..."
