I work in a large company, offices in most countries also China. The Nordic team I belong to is often the best of meeting certain IT goals. China comes a bit down on the list, maybe showing that whatever "better than the west" education they have do not transfer into practical use in our branch. "Creative efficiency" counts too you see. That you work hard might not matter much if some one else works smart and get to the goal faster.

I think one of the good things Europe does (not the West as a whole) is to have a balance between real studying and prestige and free time. Or even make the studying so interesting that you don't see it as studying anymore. So you will doing better as a result. But I must say in some countries here the level of education is too low and it seems that being on Facebook, sitting in a bubblebath and act happy all the time has become more important. So with freedom and happyness there needs to be a balance. And were now on a point where you (socially) are almost not allowed to be unhappy. So people get superficial and only study to get a job that pays them the bubblebath where they can lay in and the ultimate superficial reaction to put it on Facebook. And why am I saying this all? Well, if the mindset of masses of people will turn in this direction, education will adjust to this. It will change to fit the general mindset. And this is something that we must prevent from happening. But you can see it already in the American culture and education, wich is lower than general European. Yes, Americans like to brag, but actually their level isn't as high. They do have great universaties though. But that's just small. Especially the North/West European countries are the highest. Asian education is good. But a lot of people are just not able to study well at this level. And the result is burn-out, less creativity, suicide, psychological problems and disfunction in studying and working eventually.

So put hard work into your creative ideas, makes sense.
But what I have a problem with is: telling creative people what to do.
We mustn't try to shame creative people we must inspire them.
