Something with the chorus on this tune that really lifts it up...Could be those huge backup vocals that you hardly hear but brings a certain vibe to it

No matter the meaning of the song and what the lyrics are really saying, I've been in love with it since I was a child and it's probably one of my most favourite songs of all time.

“Marian Gold developed most of the lyrics while going to a dentist. The theme was based on two friends who were involved in the sordid drug scene of Berlin's Zoo station. The song tells of such lovers who fantasize about being drug-free. The refrain "big in Japan" symbolises this idea of being successful in another world. Said Gold, "that line has a certain meaning. It means that if you're a complete loser, you're telling other people, 'I'm not a loser because in Japan I'm really big.' It's the lie of the loser and it fitted perfectly into the story of these junkies, which the song is about, in a very tragic way."[3] Gold later explained "we originally weren’t sure whether we should put it on the album, because it’s a bit autobiographical in that it reflects my time in West Berlin in the late 70s, with the drug scene around the train station and the zoo, and all the underground things. It has nothing to do with Japan."

no wonder I love this song, I'm big in JAPAN people!

"In a 1998 interview, Alphaville lead singer explained: 'Big In Japan' tells about a couple of lovers trying to get off Heroin. They both imagine how great it would be to love without drugs: no steal, no clients, no iceage in pupils, real emotions, true worlds. Berlin Zoo is an important meeting place for junkies. "Big in Japan" meant as if you are nothing in your environs, you can be big somewhere else. And if you aren't that, you can tell it at home. So I used it for the refrain of the song"

This song should be the official song for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. :)

In a 1998 interview with the German online magazine Re.flexion, Alphaville lead signer Marian Gold explained: "I must admit the only ones who understood the meaning of the song correctly were Bernhard (Lloyd) and our then publisher Andy Budde. Bernhard recognized the quality of the song and Andy the ability of its marketing."

"'Big In Japan' tells about a couple of lovers trying to get off Heroin. They both imagine how great it would be to love without the drug: no steal, no clients, no ice age in the pupil, real emotions, true worlds. Till nowadays Berlin station Zoo is an important meeting place for junkies. That's why this place became a venue of the song."

A song which never gets old or boring, I have heard this song so many times over and over ever since it came out in early 80's. I think it's the rhythm which is addictive, still can't sing along due to British accent.
