This happened a lot growing up with my cousins. Relatives would be all chummy with us older kids then slyly go have conversations with everyone else. Everytime we got up and went elsewhere we were yelled at to go back and watch the kids, my brother and I just kept walking off. If we arent asked, don't assume cause "family". Bless the fact our mother was on our side, even another aunt or uncle.

She wasn't smart enough (nor concerned enough) about her child to ensure they're being looked after. Kids will be kids and you cannot expect other people (no matter how old and who) to watch your child, no matter the length of time and what you're doing. Have enough respect for other people and enough concern for your child's safety to do those things. It's no one else's responsibility to care for your child[ren] except for the parent[s] of that child[ren]. My mom had to put a thousand miles between herself and her parents. She bought them houses, appliances, wrote weekly, sent money monthly. Her sister’s kids were so out of control two went to prison.

I wish I was as quick as your daughter. I think you should type out your daughter's reply and give every family member who is sick and tired of the "bratsitting" without being asked. Have them all keep it in their purse or pull it out and read it every time they find themselves in this situation. Your sister should soon learn to not assume. My Huband, who was my BF at the time both got screamed at at a family gathering where he and I went for a walk on the beach, we didn't know but some of the kids followed us, we were in our 20's they were young teens, when we came back without the kids we were screamed at for not watching the kids.... never quite worked out why they were our responisbility, no one asked us to watch them, we didn't even know they followed us. I'd never expect someone to look after my kids unless I had asked them first if it was Ok
