I'm not a cryer when I know its fiction, but even I shed some tears over the BJ/Maxie storyline. Everyone was excellent from writing to acting. That deserves to go down in soap history, and I'm always happy to see it remembered in these types to retrospectives.

Oh God, when Tony put his ear to Maxie's chest after the surgery so he could listen to BJ's heartbeat... that sticks with me to this day. Beautiful dramatic acting for Brad Maule, Jackie Zeman, and Kristina Wagner. Maxie was Tony's niece - Frisco Jones' daughter and Frisco was his brother

I remembered Marlena being possessed by the devil in Days Of Our Lives in exorcism mode. I was almost 9 years old when I saw it.

On Y&R, I would argue that Cassie Newman’s death was more shocking and impactful to the show’s canon than Delia’s death.

GH once had a storyline anout a device that would freeze the entire city, if I remember correctly.
Back in the late 90's I spent a few weeks as an extra on DOOL. They treated us very well. 😊

I'm from the UK and I grew up watching Friends and I find it both funny and surreal that - not only were these real american soap opera's being referenced and shown but it was also brilliant that one of the shows featured on this list was Days of Our Lives as well as the fact that there was an exorcism story-line feels in keeping with the same version of Days that was in the Friends universe.
I could just imagine dr Drake Ramoray training to become a minister just so he could assist in the exorcism. Also can I just say a show called Guiding Light tackling both time travel and a cloning of an actual human being storyline...!? Just goes to show that you guys in the states, when it comes to writing soap operas don't have any kind of limitations as to where a series can go, do you. These shows probably laugh in the face of the phrase jumping the shark
Granted our soaps over in the UK have a famous example where one of our shows Emmerdale, once known as Emmerdale Farm was dying in the ratings and it was kind of meant to be a semi-educational show about life in rural communities in England particularly in regards to the farms and the taking care of its animals. But it was losing viewers so the writers just came out and said why don't we just drop a plane on the residents of Emmerdale and to make it even more bleak it was a new years eve themed special.
Characters were burned alive, crushed under debris, and one man, one of the most likeable in the show, gets eviscerated by an explosion. It was insane but now its considered it worked to boast ratings so I probably shouldn't be too surprised having watched this list. The most shocking story/scenes happened a couple of decades ago on Y&R. David, a bad guy, was trying to escape the police and go on the run. He went to a plastic surgeon to get a new face. He forced the surgeon to perform the surgery, but while David was under, the doctor carved the word KILLER on David's forehead. I loved it!!
