Canna are great for beginners. I have a tendency to "over love" my plants with water and they love lots of water. I bought a few of them five years ago, had some luck and stored the rhizomes over winter in some straw down in the basement...fast forward to now, I have over 75 rhizomes and I give some to friends each year. One thing I have learned is that they love to be close together in a pot, So I put a few in each. They put on a huge display in summer. My neighbors think I'm a garden expert LOL. I'm in zone 5b.

Hi Steph. I went in search of the canna lilies at Tractor Supply and they. had none of the bare root plants you show. I too am in zone 6b here in Massachusetts. They had none, so I called 2 more Tractor Supply stores and they told me the same thing, "No
bare root plants yet. So, disappointing. I really was motivated by your video to get started on some of those beautiful cannas. I'll keep trying. Thanks for your wonderful videos and abundance of gardening information.

Another great video, Steph! I bought some Canna from Walmart, but it didn’t look near the size that yours were. Guess I’ll find out tomorrow how big they actually are. Thanks again for all your amazing knowledge and passion for flowers and sharing it! You rock!!!

I bought elephant ears (taro root) from my local ethnic store for $1.25. I got a small one but there were huge ones! I planted in a pot under grow lights in my laundry room which is the warmest room in my house (76°F) but with an emergency Mylar blanket ($2 at Walmart) wrapped in the shelf it get the temperature at to 80°F so my Elephant ear is growing beautifully!

As a newer gardener, I really appreciate this straightforward, and super helpful demonstration! 👏🏻 I have never purchased/grown plants this way, but have always been curious when I see them in stores! I might get brave enough to try one! 🌱

Always learn some from
your videos, potting those rhizomes/tubers in a small pot first is such a great idea! Thank you for always educating us! 😄

Thanks for this video on potting up the bare root plants, and your advice on which ones are best to start earlier in pots and leave inside.

I am so jealous of the lupines! So affordable and beautiful. I’ve never seen barefoot lupines before

Ooh, I love the dark foliage elephant ear. I am so glad you let folks know that these things come out much sooner than many can put them out in their gardens. I pot up my dahlias early in trays so I can take cuttings and then I have to plant my dahlias in the pots since gophers eat the tubers if I don't, I guess they think I grow the dahlias for them. I have always grown my lupine from seed so I have never bought them bare root either but I have divided the ones I have and I am not sure I have seen them, so interesting. That is a gorgeous canna color. My canna rhizomes got smashed by bears after I potted them up so they never did well.

Oooh I like that container with the elephant ear and the nasturtium planted under it. I think I will do that!

I’m glad you mentioned that about potting dahlias up early. I hated wasting so much expensive soil doing that extra step and the work too. Lol I’ve been trying to find creative ways to reuse soil just because everything is so expensive right now. Great find at the big box store! Wish we had such a great selection here. Definitely on the lookout for bare-root lupine 😊

Hi, I liked your video but not that I feel of urge to go running out to find this Elefant Ear you showed 😅😅 it’s beautiful
I have agree with you on your remarks of starting the dahlia. So far I spend this year around $60 just on potting mix for the bare root plants. Dahlias needed such a large pot to fit. Than I had the pots placed all over the house close to windows and it looked so messy for 6 weeks. Can’t and don’t want to deal with that.
One new plant I am trying this year from bare root is Lavender. I was quite surprised when I unpacked them that they looked shape wise like a boxwood and they where still green and smelled heavenly. I have never seen the Lupen bare root. I need to go back to your other videos to see where you found those. Have an amazing weekend

I never thought of pre-planting elephant ear bulbs. It seems like it takes FOREVER. On the Dahlia tubers I pre-plant them with just the bare amount of soil needed. It helps me to know if any of the Dahlias are bad. If it’s bad I don’t want to waste a space in the garden. I then just repurpose that soil for other outdoors pots. I understand though, it is extra work for a bit. You truly have to love gardening to pursue it. It can turn into “work” very quickly. Thank you for your video. I have learned quite a bit from you. Keep them coming. 🌸😁
