I just found this out myself recently, but the weird gun he comes with is actually meant to go with Megatron! It plugs into his back to mimic his G1 gun barrel.

PSA: to have the birbs on Soundwave's arm, fold up their legs, pull out their 5mm port, and just peg em in. Works on Thundertron's left shoulder, too, if like me you don't love the way the bat feet are *squeeezed* by the two slots on the right shoulder.

7:38 I've had a bunch of those little QC issues lately. Ruckus didn't tab properly on the arms, 86 Optimus had the backwards feet and a burr on his shoulder that impeded transformation, and my 86 Springer had to be sent back for 2 left shoulders.
