Is bowhunting ethical? Or just hunting at all? Today, we discuss the ethics of hunting.

I bow hunt, and I'm a Christian... so I have often seen a lot of criticism that I am killing God's innocent creatures and I should know better since I can just go into the store and buy my food.

In this video I wanted to discuss this. Is hunting ethical? To address this topic I want to look at it from four angles.

Our separation from how food is prepared.
Conservation/Stewardship
Christian Perspective
a bowhunters promise

You likely have an opinion on this... good. Please leave a comment below... I just ask that we have a civil discourse is all.

God Bless You!
Joe

Joe, you did a nice job with this topic, brother. You also get an A for courageous media! I happen to agree with you on so many points you've made, including that Christ is King, but you've made a great presentation here no matter my agreement or disagreement. Nicely done.

I've been an avid bow hunter for 14 years and harvested many animals . One would think a person would become callous or indifferent at some point. The opposite is true. The more experienced I become and the better my skills become, both as a hunter and an archer, the more critical I am of myself when making a bad shot or when an animal has to suffer longer than necessary. This comes from respect for the animals that I hunt. I want to harvest that animal as efficiently as possible. Licenses that hunters pay for and, in some jurisdictions, taxes on sporting goods fund government organizations that enforce wildlife laws and conservation efforts which ensure those animals are protected and supported so that they can exist. Without that mechanism in place, many wild animals would suffer as a result and unfortunately many animals can be hunted to extinction or die due to overpopulation, disease, and/or famine. The other part of the equation is that I select the animal I intend to harvest. I see where it lives, what it eats, it's overall health. I control how it is harvested. From there, I control how the meat is handled and prepared all the way to my table. I have full control and knowledge of what I am consuming, in contrast to what you purchase at the store where all you may know is what the meat looks like.

think about this: I would rather eat a happy healthy wild animal, living in a natural way without any additives, then a factory finished piece of meat.EDIT: unbelieveable! I posted these comments before you said it. you and I think alike in many ways. bless you my friend. Mike

I'm a hunter i grew up on a free range beef farm! the problem with the majority they are too far removed from feeding themselves they've handed over the responsibility of looking after themselves to the rest of society everyone has there job to do. Most people don't even have a veggie patch so how are they going to understand hunting and taking responsibility for themselves

Hi Joe, I don't even have to leave comment here about the ethics of hunting. You've already pointed out everything I would have said. Best Wishes from Germany. Ingo

GREAT video, I completely agree. By the way, I really like that you don't push your convictions on the viewers. You simply state that you live your life for God and I can see I can see in your personality that you are genuine in your beliefs. And by being so subtle, I have started to think about trad archery being somewhat spiritual as you stated in one of your previous videos. I guess what I'm trying to say is keep planting those little seeds and I'm positive that like me, some viewers will start to think about salvation and inner peace a little more. Sorry for rambling, I just felt I had to tell you that I feel you're leading by example in the best possible way. Keep up your outstanding mission.

I know this is a older video Joe I was hoping to see a video about shooting out of tree stands. Going to start shooting out of my truck standing on the tool box and work my way up. All tips are welcome. Thanks I always enjoy your videos.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Wow, nice job again Joe. A topic that all of us hunters have been in probably many times. I do my best in a mature way to express many of the same points you just brought and always the individual continues to argue or accuse me of being a murderer. It urks me even more when I know the just finished a double cheese burger for lunch and they used their car with leather seats to go pick it up. I just let them know i don't shoot at anything I don't plan on eating (as I've taught my son and his friends), and my hunting partner and I always try to donate at least one deer a year to the food banks. some years we don't harvest any and I feel we haven't done our role because we weren't able to donate anything. Anyways all we can do is continue to try and express to those the overall value we as ethical hunters bring to society. Oh ya, don't even get me going on how much $$$$money$$$$ all of us hunters pump into the economy. Ya got 3 more hours? lol, thanks again Joe have blessed week.

I totally agree about hunting. I hear the same argument, even from family, that there is no need to go out and kill something when you could just go to the store and buy it. I always ask them what they think happens to that animal they buy in the grocery. That poor animal had NO chance to get away. Plus, as you say, they don't live in the best conditions sometimes. Truly it IS a serious thing to kill an animal for food, that's why we owe it to them to work hard and take only a good shot to kill quick and clean. God bless you and your family. May St. Hubert and St. Sebastian intercede for you, my friend. Pax Vobiscum, Steve

Oh no Joe, the E word!!!!

I don't ride people outside of hunting. However I do have my complaints on hunters, but I don't want to get started. Mainly about what they do/act that just puts a bad outlook on hunters.

Otherwise just one quick comment. Poachers are not hunters. They are the true animal murders.

Hunting is as ethical as the hunter in my opinion. It is the difference between stalking a fair chase hunt or a poacher shooting out of season or from a road just for the head or antlers. As far as God's opinion on hunting, refer to Genesis27:3 or Genesis 20:21. Hunting is another form of conservation.  Great videos to think about Joe, keep it up.

Once when after I took my kids to Macdonalds my daughter asked me where hamburger came from. She was shocked to learn that hamburger comes from cows that we slaughter. That ignorance of the source of our food is far more unethical than hunting itself.

Awesome video brother, there is a direct connection between myself as a bowhunter and the animal that I harvest for food for my family. Not only am I shooting my bows year round but I also feed the deer through food plots I put in, supplemental feed, and the minerals I put down.Truth be told too that it's obviously not always about the kill, a lot of the time is spent enjoying God's beautiful creations, I like to watch deer as much as hunt them, my wife makes fun of me because I pull off the road to watch deer or turkeys. God gave us dominion over every animal on earth, we are to be stewards as you said, they are also for our enjoyment and to provide sustenance for our families. God bless you brother and shoot a new string too, if you're looking for a Godly man that builds strings check out HCB strings and Daniel Wade Binkley on Facebook

I think, if you make it quick so the animal don´t suffers to much and you will eat it, its ok to hunt.
The hunting process can make fun, the adrenalin ande the excitement but you should do it for the meat, not just for the fun.
If you hunt and kill a animal and prepare it to eat you appreciate the meat more than before.

My Opinion: Whoever made those comments to you did not think it through. At all. Hunting is much more ethical than store bought meat. When you hunt and kill an animal, you are killing an animal that has most likely lived a long and natural life in their natural habitat. Anything bought in a store has most likely lived it's entire live in bad conditions and has most definitely been killed many many years short of its natural life. Animals are slaughtered after a year or two or even less when they could have lived up to a decade or more. Beef Cattles are killed after 18 months when they could have lived 15 to 20 years. Also the way animals are slaughtered is very traumatizing compared to hunting. Also hunters waste less. Some use the heart, liver, and fur too.
