Both seasons of Tales From the Tour Bus, were bloody brilliant.
Im expecting Mike Judge to re-visit this series (at least) twice. With one run for rock & roll, and one for hip-hop.
PLEASE! While there are still enough legends left to tell these wild stories.

I can't remember where it comes from but i always think about a line that went something like:
"The only thing necessary to jazz is the one, everything else is open to suggestion."

No matter how crazy or experimental you want to be, if you can nail that downbeat together then the band will sound like a unit.

Another funny anecdote about how James Brown enabled Bootsy to TRULY become Bootsy was about Bootsy's first bass: a Silvertone guitar strung up with bass strings.

James was going "Son, you can't be in the JAMES BROWN band playing that ruler on a cornflakes box, you need some proper gear, now what would you like to have?"
And Bootsy, deciding to go on a limb, said "One of them Fender Jazz Basses with the pearl blocks in the neck and those Ampeg amps which look like refrigerators." thinking that James would laugh in his face for suggesting something THAT fancy.
He got a laugh alright, but a genuine laugh, James said "Boy, I like your style, now let's get you all of that!"

After all these years….I finally found out about…..The One….
I heard it growing up through my uncles and aunts as a little kid but, I didn’t understand it…I like the term…I also saw Bill Cosby use the term on The Cosby show 😂

Before I watch this, I heard "the one" once, and I interpreted as "the fundamental job of the rhythm bassist". Hit the one-beat. Now, depending on what you're doing, you can also hit the two and four, or do whatever, but if the band leader asks you to "give me the one" he's telling you to cool it and stop stepping on the lead parts, and get back into the rhythm section.

Now I'm going to see what the master says. [edit: yeah, but he says it better. Because no matter how cool I get, I'll never be sitting in front of a young Bootsie Collins, who's standing, and saying "son, you just can't play." That's discovering calculus level cool.]

Funk accents the one; reggae has no one.

People say it was chris brown but it was definitely james brown who will be remembered as the most talented cokehead in US history

Strangely, if you look at a lot of James Brown basslines, the bass avoids the first beat, as to not clash with the kick drum.
