Advice on Preppers Burying School Buses and Campers

On account of my previous video that details some of the dos and don'ts of burying shipping containers, I’m putting out this follow up in order to answer some other questions that came up. I had a lot of people asking, “well, what about burying a bus or a camper”? Well what about it? Let’s take a look…

Advice for burying something that wasn't designed to be buried; don't.

I used to live in an old bus, back when I was a hippie. It was less than convenient, (but better than some dumps I have lived). It was built like a tank, but NOT for the kinds of loads that TONS of dirt on the roof and sides would produce. It's designed to protect kids during a collision, not an avalanche.

I have a suggestion for your research, or for folks to look into if they are wanting to bury something to live in or as a temporary shelter. A vault for cemetary burial is built to protect an inner container to prevent collapse. I am not suggesting using one of these, but just looking at how they are made and materials used etc. I am not talking about a grave liner, but a vault. Depending on your area the two may be interchangeable but they are very different in how they are constructed, even though they dont look that much different until you get to the more high end ones. Sometimes smaller local gravestone companies make vaults and grave liners as well as tombstones, and since they are small companies they may be able to help put together a larger vault structure that would safely house another livable container. Vaults dont prevent air from entering either, some people have heard this, that is just people confusing it with a rubber seal casket. Vaults usually have rebar inside and have a lid which is sealed on with whatever goop they use. Those companies also sometimes manufacture those smaller family mausoleums that you sometimes see in some cemeteries and those are built something like vaults. Kinda creepy, I know, but it's just building materials and those folks could probably put together something very, very sturdy for this. The reason for a vault or even grave liner isnt so much to protect the casket for sentimental reasons, it is to prevent the inevitable collapse of the casket fro. The weight of the soil and water over time, which would make maintenance of a cemetary much harder because of very uneven ground. Vaults usually seal out water and some have actually floated away during floods so if its manufactured for you, it could probably serve the need very well for cheaper than regular building companies.

This idea just crossed my mind while watching this so it might actually be a terrible idea, but then again talking to the manufacturers or even just looking carefully at how they are built if you know about that sort of thing, is the only way to know for sure. It's just an idea that i think might turn into something useful. At least i hope so.

Also companies that make tornado shelters are also good places to call to get info and ideas. Im looking forward to a follow up video because now I'm curious.

And I still really want to hear your thoughts on those dna ancestry drugstore mail in kits. 23 and me etc. My husband and grown kids think I'm being silly but I want nothing to do with those things. Not just for govt having the info but insurance companies, and your dna being stolen etc.

The battle Bruce from Ark 2 needed to win was the damp issue, sadly he has lost that one along time ago. What a shame. Your right in saying it's not fit for purpose anymore, the MOLD alone would kill you now I suspect.

Have you ever seen the photos (and description) of the fellow who buried a fiberglass sailboat hull in his yard? He uses it for a combination root cellar and guest home. The shape and material seems to not have the same issues as buses or containers. There is only one example I have ever seen, so, not sure if this would work or not. I was considering this, until I discovered how tough my soil was. The guy who did this used an empty hull, myself, I found a free 28' sailboat with no rigging (or brightwork), but the galley and head were in good shape. I would have to give the guy $200 for a deposit on his boat trailer. If I brought back the trailer he would return the cash. Never got around to that project, built an earth bermed greenhouse instead.

Woodn't be safer to build a structure out of wood than some of these options at this point?

Quonset huts are the perfect prefab structure to bury. Some are even designed to be buried. All our ammo bunkers in the military were of this type. JFK had one on Peanut Island in Florida in case nuclear war struck while he was down there.

Making a structure to bury a us defeats the whole purpose, just make a structure and call it a day.

About the sponsors, TAKE THEM.

Bruce Beach (the guy who buried 38 school buses ) is not more insane than most it is that his fear is more profound.

The cheapest strong structure for a deep underground bunker would be one made from compressed earth blocks made of the soil evacuated from the hole, the soil needs to be appropriate for the purpose though, if its too full of humus additional sand or aggregate is needed, if the clay content is too low that will need boosting, and addition of concrete for stabilization is a good idea too. A vaulted ceiling with appropiately robost walls and foundation is also needed, however the mass pressing down and on the sides would actually help the structure stay solid. Drainage and extra water proofing of the roof and side walls is still needed though as even stabilized compressed earth blocks arent supposed to be immersed in waterlogged soil for long periods. A few inches of heavy clay should be sufficient as long as drainage doesn't erode it.

Stop burying busses, this is why I can't find any cool vintage busses to hotrod/ratrod for cheap.

I think there was a time when people did live underground unfortunately
