In every major sport there are players who love the game, and players who play it because they are good at it, or because they can make money at it. I think the players that absolutely LOVE the game are the ones that will go the extra mile to win a championship.

Love your show. I sometimes click off a moment early, then click on your video again to hit the like because I know it's important, although it's not something I typically think about. Keep up the great work!

Love of the game is what it came down to for me. Things didn't go exactly as my dreams would have liked, but I was still playing and finished out the season. I had a talk with my uncle, he was an All American in college and went on the the NFL, seemed like a good source for football advice. He told me, frankly, that I couldn't get to where I wanted to go from where I was, and my final years would be spent playing for the love of the game. Then, he asked me if I was still in love with the game. I did not play the next season. Since, I've coached for a few decades, and I've seen kids with many different motivations to play the game that have done quite well for themselves. At the end of the day, it's a value assessment. If the game is satisfying something the player values, they'll continue to play with a high degree of commitment. Love, money, opportunity, maintaining an image, a team is made up of guys that have many reasons to be there. It all works, if the player does. Obviously I do love the game, I just had more love than talent.

As someone who HAS a brother trying to use football im just proud he's tryna use his ability to help his family, like the same way some folk in certain majors I college don't LOVE what they do

I played division one football. I will say that to get to play at that level, you loved football at some point in your life. Once you get to the division 1 level, it becomes a job. Like Josh said, for a lot of guys, it is a way out of bad situations and a way to change their family tree. I have seen many players come in as bright eyed freshman who loved football, lose their love of football after 1 week of fall camp. College football isn’t a game that you play because you love. It’s a job that can open doors and set you up for a lifetime of success. I loved football in high school, after a couple years of college, it turned into loving what football could do for my future

nikola jokic proves that you can treat the game as a job and still be great.

I think most players today still love playing football as in the actual games but I don't think they love football overall like kids used to. For example I talked to a power 5 linebacker last year who didn't know who Devin White was. He loves playing linebacker but outside of that he doesn't really follow the game how kids used to.

I played FBS level football, and I'd say about half the players loved football, the other half were just good at it and using it as a means to an

Hit the nail on the head. For some, it’s just a job that they have to do…the same as the majority of people. Also, I think that’s it’s hard to be as invested or love the sport with it becoming such a business now. In addition, having a constant source of feedback from every single fanbase just seconds away through social media.

Maybe it's not the love of college football, it could be the love of winning over someone else and looking down on them in disdain.

Mental errors, not knowing the rules in different situations.. those are immediate signs the team or coaches don't have enough love and respect for the game. It's hard to watch

Yeah, I was in the band for years until I wasn't. Played football the first year I dropped out. What kids love changes as fast as their bodies themselves. How well players love a sport have alot to do with how much of themself they put into it. Often we find who doesn't love it after they get paid.

I don't like college football either. Not really sure why I watch it obsessively and tune in for live CFB talk shows three times a week year round. Texas A&M probably put something in the water during freshman indoctrination camp.

I believe they definitely love the game cause I’m sure they’ve been playing for a while Atl most of them have and yes they’ll get money if they’re super good but most are not able to play professionally so they most definitely love the game IMO!!!

This is pretty subjective. But I totally agree with Josh on this. Cut open the veins of 10 players and half of them bleed football. The other half are just there to make it out of the slums or make it to the NFL for money. This is possibly the BEST episode of this channel I've ever seen. Ought to take a swig from the newly re-named "Chalice of Truth" after this question was answered.

Hey Josh, I played college basketball until this February. I know different sports, but same concept applies.

I would say confidently that half of all college athletes do not genuinely love the game. And I’m okay saying that because I was one of those. It took me years to realize this but I believe it’s something I always knew in the back of my mind.

However, I will say this. 95% of college athletes are NASTY competitors, and they happen to have found something that they are very talented at, that can scratch that competitive itch. This is another reason why so many athletes nowadays spend almost as much time playing video games as they do working on their craft (their respective sport). And it’s no shade to those who do that, that is how they scratch their competitive itch. And this is why you see so many college athletes being successful in the workforce and business world. That competitive edge never leaves, it just changes avenues.
