the weather conditions that day were thick fog with low visibility. They had to take a different route because the weather radar ( i think) said there was heavy fog in the santa monica mountains. The pilots started to ascend to an altitude of 4, 000 ft but they didnt realise they were taking a left turn and descending rapidly. Because of the fog they didnt realise they were falling until they saw the ground and it was too late for them to pull back up again
