I brought myself up on classical music (the music of, say, 1750 to 1850). I used to have the greatest difficulty making sense of jazz harmonies which are pretty wild compared to those of the classical era - I used to feel they were literally random notes - but by seeing them on paper and taking them a little at a time I began to understand and enjoy them. They are an acquired taste.
