Do Amish homes have bathrooms?

How alike are Amish homes to non-Amish homes? Specifically, do they have bathrooms? Like with many things Amish, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

I noticed the Amish kitchens and bathrooms in your videos. So clean and airy, with no clutter. Even with no electric lights and appliances, they look so streamlined and modern!

I live in Michigan where the Amish I know have outhouses. I took some of my Amish friends to Ohio, and was pleasantly surprised when I asked where the outhouse was. I was told they had an inhouse.

Very informative. I'd have an outhouse today if legal in town. Blessings to all, stay safe and warm ❤

I like your accent. Your videos are the highlight of my evening. A slowed back step in time ⏲

Do you have any videos on how the amish feel and communicate with native Indians?
I'm an Indian in New Mexico and my tribes are quickly losing the knowledge we once had and I hope to some day visit an amish community and learn their building and farming techniques for my people.

Something I had always thought about but never had an answer to, now I do, thanks for filling us in on the differences even between different Amish communities.

We have a cabin in Southern Ohio, and it had two out houses, one was older. But we didn't get plumbing until we rebuilt the cabin. The old cabin a tree fell on it.

This was a nice video, this was obviously a newer home with modern conveniences, a nice change from the outhouses..

The Amish around us here is WI may have an out door privy but it is supposed to have a small holding tank under it which is treated with chemicals and does not seep into the ground.

Very interesting video. I was always curious about the Amish people we'd see when traveling to northern Indiana to visit my grandparents. I like the fact that they just live their lives how they see fit and the government basically leaves them alone.

Excellent video ! There is a large Amish community that's been in my area of western Pa as long as anyone can remember and that group has the outhouse..but over the last 10-15yrs a group of Amish have been moving down here from Michigan and they have been buying up the old English farms around here ..they disconnect the house barn etc from the electric grid but keep everything else intact in the home including the bathrooms kitchen etc..I always find it interesting when you talk about the different groups of Amish and thier names country's of origin etc..I'm just so used to the Bylers and Yoder's that have been here forever and really never thought about it..✌️🙏🏻😁

What a funny topic! But then interesting as I had not thought about where they might have their bathrooms. Winters must be brutal!

Yes. I borrowed bathroom once from my Amish neighbor. They block the window, put a big tank under a big wooden box, and made several holes as toilet seats. The bathroom is very stinky like outhouse. There's no light, but there was a roll of toilet paper on the box. I had to walk to the kitchen to use the garden hose they attached to their well pump. They pump water once a day.

Great topic, Erik. My OO Amish friends all have indoor bathrooms as is standard in Lancaster County. They all have skylights and battery powered LED lamps. Now that you mention it, I almost never see gaslights in Lanco homes or businesses these days. Everyone switched to DeWalt. I miss the hiss...and the warmth in winter! :D

Have you ever researched the church of the brethren? Old order Dunkards? I grew up in the Brethren church in Virginia and we had quite a few Dunkards that lived in our county. The county is Botetourt. Pronounced Bot a tot.

I’m surprised the ordnung is unwritten. I figured with how detailed some of the standards are, they would write it down, especially to make sure it’s preserved.

Why would this be a problem? Apart from the light, and possibly the fan, all of the plumbing and so forth has ancient origins.
