The Story of America's First Surfers

The first surfers on the mainland USA were 3 Hawaiian princes in Santa Cruz. They shaped boards from Redwood trees and paddled out the river mouth. These boards weighed over 100 pounds! So cool to see how far the sport has progressed in such a short amount of time, all thanks to these pioneers.

Last episode of our surf series out tomorrow on my channel, exploring Oceanside CA and the Sticky Bumps Wax Factory.

Surf culture was documented as early as the 12th century in Ancient Polynesia. Was popularized into a “surf culture” in Hawaii… called “wave sliding”. There seems to be contention over whether it first landed in HB or Santa Cruz in the mainland U.S., however it had been around quite a while. The only reason I’m taking the time to correct this statement is b/c there are many Hawaiians who would take serious offense to this ha’ole claiming surf culture is a U.S. export. Surf fins and wetsuits, sure. But surfing itself… definitely not. It’s important to pay respect to the OG’s and culture that shared surfing with us.

We are like birds

We find, in nature, that working with it is best

I have worked with the wind, long ago, in UHR...

The desert wind would blow, and my trench coat and top hat, would blow around

And i learned, how to catapult myself into the air, using the sand storms

And i would glide across the world this way, from gust, to gust, just using leather

The ocean

I swam in, time and again

And i learned natures rules of the ocean

By swimming in it

Then, i made a board, to float

And coast, diagonal to the shore

Because that is the cardinal rule of oceans, swim diagonal to the shore

And from that board, and that rule

I traveled the seas, on a surfboard, from the kansas river, to missouri, and the delta, and the gulf

To Australia

Where i made digeridoos

Which are tubular surf boards

For boat motors....

I traveled, the world, but i was born on the prarie

Umm isn’t Hawaii USA? Is this dude drinking the salt water or something? I get if you want to be technical, not a state until 1959, but was a US territory in 1898.
