Yangtze’s Worst Drought continues: Millions of people have difficulty getting water/Ocean backflow

Residents in the Yangtze River Delta basically rely on the river as a source of drinking water, and Shanghai, in particular, relies on several reservoirs on the river. The overall lowering of water levels in the middle and lower reaches will lead to serious water shortages in these areas. For example, if the water level in the midstream section of Wuhan City is low, the water level in the downstream section of Jiujiang City in Jiangxi Province, Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu Province, and Shanghai will be low. The low water level in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will produce a phenomenon, that is, the seawater at the mouth of the Yangtze River will pour in. For the city of Shanghai, this year's record lack of rain and high temperatures have exacerbated the "salty water" crisis Shanghai currently experiences. This should also be the underlying reason for the unprecedented panic felt by Shanghai residents.

I love how the Chinese farmer at the end redacted her statement about the drought and the impact it will have on the harvest. Brilliant lady 👏

Another reason for the salty tide is the disappearing of wetlands like the ones in Chongming Island off of Shanghai. As more development and homes go up, these wetlands get replaced by green space with much less biodiversity. Local professors have been writing about it for awhile. Birders complain. Without the filtering effect of these natural filters, the local water gets more and more salty and polluted. Treatment plants can't keep up without proper investment. Now a local park is cut in half because a new storage tank looms right next to it.

They turned every river into a series of evaporation ponds. No more water enters the start of each river but far less makes it to the end, concentrating all the pollution and salt that water carried. Plus if you pour water on the ground it soaks in. Rivers take centuries to seal their beds with clay. Each new valley they flood loses more water that way for decades. (The Los Angeles river runs through concrete for a reason.) And their Dunning-Kruger response to the droughts they cause is more dams.

They'll probably print the ground blue/green to make it look like water is still there just like how they painted a tree green to make it look green.

That lady at the end there, she deserves a standing ovation... The very personification of sarcasm right there, even if she herself doesn't realise it..

Winter in Japan comes when humid warm clouds from china passes through the frozen mountains from Japan. The warm water freezes in the cold mountains and turn into snow. We could expect an unusual winter in Japan soon as well.

If there’s a shortage of water now, you can bet there’ll be a shortage of crops next.

The mechanism of this is where the river meets the ocean there is an estuary. Depending on the weather up river, sometimes fresh water can be found miles out to sea, sometimes there is salt water miles up river.

In this case, China's drought is bad enough that Shanghai's water supply has become salty.

China's rivers and lakes water are massively mismanaged. The Chinese Hydro Geologist, Dr Fan Xiao, has criticised the Three Gorges Dam repeatedly over many years, as an environmental disaster. Now, this disaster is happening as the Yangtze channel and downstream lakes dry up, causing ecological havoc and an economic crises to China's most populated region. The Three Gorges Dam was less a remedial fresh water storage and diversion and hydro electric scheme than more a political showcase project with devastating consequences to Chinese agriculture, Chinese downstream cities and an ecological disaster to the Yangtze Valley system.

The fish those people are collecting will probably be gone this time next year. Hope they enjoyed their final harvest

What's crazy to me is the total lack of birds. We've had lakes dry out on the west coast of the US recently and the amount of birds picking over the fish is staggering. I guess it's true that there really are no birds in china 🤣🤣.

Like rubbing salt into their wounds. Want this problem to disappear? Just lock everyone down until it rains again. A reign of terror, no doubt.

That reminded me of a joke from Stalin's period:
- Comrad, how is the potatoes yield?
- Great! So much that it would reach the foot of god!
- Comrad! There is no god!
- There are also no potatoes....

They're already suffering heavily from polluted water, the drought is like rubbing salt to the wound.

Gotta admit for a long time I thought it was the Three *Gorgeous* Dams, like they built three dams and they were all really good-looking.

Kid: Hey mom, where did you get all this fish for dinner?
Mom: Sh... don't talk about it.
Kid: Where did you get the oil you fried it in?
Mom: To your room!
