They did not fail. With the practice and the hard work you can never tell they failed. The car was just good enough, especially for Sebastian. You just cant say he failed.

Alonso wasn’t meant to be fighting for the championship for ferrari in his years. He made the imposible to make the car look good. There will never be a driver as skillful to do that except alonso

In Alonso's case (maybe with prost and Vettel as well, I am just very informed about Alonso's case because I'm Spanish and a big Alonso fan) it's not that Alonso failed Ferrari but Ferrari failed Alonso. With a car that was far for being a competitive one, Alonso practically won 2 championships, and one was lost at last race because Ferrari didn't want to follow Alonso's strategy. The engineers didn't listen to Alonso's tips on what should be improved in the car because "It's a Ferrari, he shouldn't criticise it..."
