Why SpongeBob LOVES Gross Close-ups...

Why does SpongeBob do these weird close up shots and where the hell did the come from?

Well, the gross-up as it’s called actually goes back about 100 years. The reason you probably didn’t notice is because no show has used it on the level SpongeBob has. Remember when SpongeBob ripped his pants so much it got old? That’s what happened to the gross up. And that’s not all.

We have this guy to thank. Bob Camp has worked behind the scenes on SpongeBob forever. He also worked on REN & Stimpy, which had more than its fair share of *gross up* yeah… it doesn’t help that SpongeBob is the first show since REN and Stimpy to talk so much about toenails and pimples.

His partner on REN and Stimpy was a fan of Fleischer Popeye, which goes back to the 1930’s. SpongeBob is the most notorious example, since most shows use it once or twice ever, SpongeBob has well over 50!

Flapjack and Chowder also made good use of the gross-up. I feel like its a hallmark of the late 00s kids cartoons at this point. Then there was Mr Meaty who made the whole show like that.
