-10LUFS is usually the standard for mainstream pop/hiphop

The crazy amount of people that doesn’t understand that it highly depends on the music genre you are mixing. Go on with your masters at -14lufs, but skrillex (who mix electronic music like dubstep) cannot be this quiet lol. Many other examples like hardstyle, techno, psytrance sound loud.

If you're skrillex you need -2 😂😂😂

Do I need to play the whole song from the beginning to the end to get proper integrated lufs?

But how do you get it to that number of LUFS? I pull down the threshold on the limiter and it just distorts to hell.

People always talk like losing dynamics is a bad thing.

If you have a nice mix and a nice loud master, it fills the room. It sounds like the musicians are there next to you. Start increasing dynamic range and that sound starts dropping away. Losing that in your face compression certainly gives a sense of further distance from the sound source.

Also another thing people forget is modern life is noisy. I don't want quiet bits in my song that I won't hear 'cos the neighbour is slamming the doors, or the washing machine is on in the next room etc. When you start turning up volume to hear above these daily noises on a dynamic song, you can end up with some ear bursting peaks.

You get a way bigger sense of space from heavily compressed modern music and that immersion is way more pleasurable than large variances in volume levels within the songs.

Heavy compression only tends to sound bad, if it has been done badly. Tom Coyne did lovely masters and he used to squash the shit out of them. Going back to the super volume days, every time I heard a master and it sounded crystal clear and deep, I'd check the inlay and it was usually Sterlings Tom Coyne and often with Sony's Jason Goldstein on the mix. If I imported the wave in to an editor there was dynamic chamges all the way through but within a tiny tiny range and it sounded amazing.

I have heard some shitty harsh masters but that is bad engineering. I only ever really noticed on a big name on Jay Z's Kingdom Come. That album was fucked. Ear fatigue in 30 seconds but as a general rule most things sounded great.

Post production needs to be done in reference to itself, same as parts of a mix are done to each other but then people were subtracting a light master from a heavy master and saying listen, that's all it is, it's just noise, just all distortion you're making. Well, yeah, of course it fucking is. If you remove 99.5% of a song, the remaining .05% isn't going to sound good is it. If you go and chop a tit off a supermodel with a machete, it's not gonna look like a nice tit anymore is it, it's gonna look like a kebab that's been thrown at a wall.

Fuck dynamics. Rant over.

Stop with the "Dynamics vs Loudness" war guys, *if it sounds good it is good* . You are free to choose your loudness to be -14 or -8, the average people doesn't give a crap about loudness lol, just focus in your premises and tastes, don't worry to much about streaming platforms.

"Do you want your mixes loud?".
Continues on showing what your goal is but not actually how to make them loud 😄 "great" tutorial... YLM is just a meter.

But a cieling limiter does the same job...

Can any of you guys/girls help guide me with the correct use of limiter ceilings. There's so much conflicting information. Cheers.

Drunk. Anything under -11 is distorted and wayyy too compressed

Just turn your amp up, if you want it louder. Your mix is more important and maintaining the dynamics in the mix. This guy has said a number of nonsenses in quite a few of his videos. The mix is more important than the master.
