A French Port And A Ferry Home. And Why Neither Was As Expected! Brittany Ferries Cherbourg To Poole

Yes, today's video was MEANT to be a ferry review, but like you'll see here, everything doesn't always work out like you had hoped. Luckily, I had some footage from Cherbourg to share with you otherwise it would have been a very short video :D Hope you enjoy it anyway...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a 9-5 job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

steve, one of the things that i have noticed is that pretty much no matter where you go, you ALWAYS seem to focus on and find positive things to say about the places you visit, even if they are only a brief layover between flights, trains or ferries, such as this one. it is such a treat to always come away from watching your videos with a positive feeling about the world and all the wonderful places that one can find along the way if we only take the time to look. thanks again for another wonderful experience.

I have to say, I have a lot of respect for you for not changing your values for our entertainment (I’m talking about filming families on the ferry 😉). Keep up the incredible work.

I have just recently found your channel and binge watched your videos since then - You just have such a lovely spirit, so much kindness in your delivery and you explore places in a very honest and true way.
I love that you show them as they are, in rain, in sun, in their mundaneness but also with excitement for random bus shelters, public transit, walking and finding the small details.
I can’t get enough of this channel, you earned a new fan here!

Only Steve Marsh could make a shot of a mop and pail on deck part of a story. Loved the streets of Cherbourg. Thank you

Thanks Steve. This brought back so many memories. My husband walked down to Poole harbour in 1992 to watch Barfleur sail in on her maiden voyage. We travelled many times to Normandy on her. In the early days you booked a table in the restaurant and an announcement was made for Mr and Mrs that our table was ready! Different days.
I’m sure you would really love the Normandy DDay coast. There is so much history there and we found people very welcoming. We used to go in early June about the time of the Remembrance.

Great video, Steve. No need to apologise for what you bring us - travelling is always a gamble when other people are involved, and we love coming along with you on your journeys. Thanks as always!

The Ferry Meister does it again - you have the knack of turning a ho-hum crossing into an entertaining adventure.

My parents retired to France (from Montrose!) just days before the first lockdown. The August thing is France wide, the whole country goes on holiday for August. The French massively incentivise holidaying in country too.

Love your content!

Ahh me Steve, you are bringing back good memories! Me and 2 mates chucked a tent in the back of a Fiesta XR2 and left Aberdeenshire for a couple of weeks wandering aimlessly through France. Spent a few days in Normandy/Brittany then headed south. Loads of fun adventures including drinking champagne out of Melamine camping mugs whilst eating snails! This was back in 1986 so almost a lifetime ago.
Enjoyed the walk around Cherbourg with you, great vid as usual!👍👏👏👏❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I went to Cherbourg many times in the late '80s when working for P&O Ferries (when they were honest ferry operators). Four crossings a day in the high season on the Portsmouth run. Many memories including when the ship was delayed leaving Cherbourg by some over zealous Brits ... police called .. they did not muck about, I can tell you! I've since toured the Loire Valley and Brittany .. look up the Nantes-Brest Canal; very interesting ... thanks for yet another great video. Merci, even.

The almighty algorithm led me to your channel a week ago. I love it Steve. You go to places i cant get to, but your spirit is endearing and makes me want to explore my corner of the world just like you do in yours.

Cheers Mate ❤ from Western Australia

As a Brit that has travelled the world myself, including having lived over 20 years in France, your videos are fantastic. We used to drive ‘home’ to see family in the UK every summer when we lived in France and those ferries rammed with families are an abiding memory!

Great video Steve, from the peace and tranquillity of Cherbourg to the chaos of screaming kids. I would have done the same as you and stayed outside. 👍.

My husband was saying how his dad used to sail from Dorset to Cherbourg sadly he recently passed away but I think this stirred a memory for my husband. He’s off work at present so we’ve been binge watching past vlogs of yours that we hadn’t seen before. We loved the ones from Wales, also the one Alicja filmed on her own in Poland. You could say we are big fans of your channel and always look forward to seeing what’s next. Thank you
