Vette!

Intro and gameplay from 1989 DOS game Vette!, developed by Sphere and published by Spectrum Holobyte. This is one of the earliest free-roam 3D racers; you could drive anywhere around the map of San Francisco in your race to the finish line, and even enter a Tour mode where you would be teleported to various SF landmarks around the map. Vette! touted itself as "The Real Duel" (referring to DSI/Accolade's Test Drive II: The Duel) since it offered true two-person multiplayer via modem or null modem cable while TD2 was strictly one player against the AI. Note that there is actually an engine sound option, but I have muted it since it's one-note pc speaker ear rape of the highest order.

@DJHcom Ah ok cool, better in what way? I'm betting sound - you couldn't get worse than this lol. I searched but of course there don't seem to be any vids of the Mac version :(

Course 1 is so boring when people record it. It's just brown and nothing else. Take the other routes so we can see the impressive city they modelled. But nobody does.
