For 1994 I recommend:
•”The Memory Police” by Yoko Ogawa (Dystopia)
•”Piercing” by Ryu Murakami (Horror/Thriller)
•”Notes of a Crocodile” by Qiu Miaojin (Queer)
*all are translated literature*

I just love seeing “OUT” on your shelf back there. I don’t know anyone else that has read that book.

seconding everyone’s memory police recommendation!!! it seems to both hold up and be up your alley!

for your next video- snow falling on cedars is an incredible book, as is the alienist! I think the alienist is more up your alley, as its twisty and mysterious, but snow falling on cedars is a wonderful depiction of incredibly complicated and broken people trying to cope with the world, which can also be a deeply moving read

Oooo Bird by Bird by Anne LaMott is super fun with some dark humor. It's about writing, but it's also about her life, which was quite the wild ride.

You would definitely love the Memory Police - it’s another failed utopian type story where words are taken out of the vocabulary and it’s dark and it’s weird and it’s amazing. I also didn’t realize that it was from 1994 until you were scrolling through that list, but that just makes it all the more amazing honestly.

absolutely dying over your “oh, ew” at Woody Allen 😂 thanks for sharing the magazine with us! 1993 was a bit before my time so it’s super interesting to see. the at for colorado is interesting because i’ve seen ads for Scotland lately. i guess they need tourism!

Really enjoying this series! I recommend In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez for 1994! One of my favorite books of 2022 and I’m so excited to read from her again. A gorgeous gorgeous historical fiction.

Walk Two Moons was one of the 3 books i enjoyed reading as a kid. (i loathed reading as a child)
i read it in 5th grade with my mom one day when she let me skip school and go to work with her. it’s one of my favorite childhood memories🥹💙

Notes Of a Crocodile by Qui Miaojin, translated by Bonnie Huie, is a book published in 1994 that is on my TBR. I haven't read it yet but I've heard that it is a queer coming-of-age story set in Taipei.

Parable of the Sower is a lifetime favorite. I challenged myself to read all of Butler a few years ago and it was a fantastic experience. For 1994 The Memory Police should for sure be on your list!
