Food dye in milk and if you drop in dish soap or poke it with a toothpick with dish soap on it it makes big rings. Perhaps that's what you mean? The used to do that every year at a science event aty kids grade school. Really neat.

You can fill a shallow pan with shaving cream. Drop fabric dye onto the shaving cream. Pat pieces of fabric on the top of the filled pan. Lift fabric carefully and allow to dry, shaving cream and all. Once dried, rinse off the fabric pieces and allow to dry again. This is a nice kids craft but be sure to wear aprons or old clothes. White or cream fabric works the best. Use the pieces in quilts, aprons, etc
