A 15 foot greenland shark was reeled in by an angler in a kayak in 2014. Joel Abrahamsson said he trained to capture the massive creature by reeling in 60-pound concrete blocks from a local lake. Then he strapped himself into a harness attached to his fishing rod in the kayak. He struggled with the greenland shark for around 90 minutes before finally capturing the 200-year old animal … which was estimated to weigh more than 1,200 pounds! It’s considered an unofficial record due to kayak fishing records being loosely kept … and the use of estimated weights. The ancient shark was later returned to the water.

A fisherman in Cambodia got a big surprise when he inspected his gill net … A Siamese giant carp that weighed around 100 kilograms (220 lbs) was trapped there! Ironically, the fisherman said he had set his nets in a more shallow area of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake (tone-lee sap lake), where smaller fish are usually found. Strong currents were thought to have swept the big fish into the shallow area. After noticing a huge tear in the netting, the fishermen alerted authorities to inspect the massive fish. The carp was later released into a deeper area of the lake. Did you know the Siamese giant carp is considered to be a rare and critically endangered species?

Did you know that fishermen in northern Thailand caught a fish that was the size of a grizzly bear? It happened in 2005, and the creature measured almost 9 feet long (2.7 meters) and tipped the scales at 646 pounds (293 kilograms)! The species is understandably known as the Mekong (meh-kong) giant catfish … and you can get an idea of just how massive this creature is in these photos by Suthep Kritsanavarin (Soo-threp Krit-zana-var-en). It seems to dwarf the two men who have spread their arms across the creature’s dorsal area … likely to give the viewer a better sense of scale. The fishermen struggled with the beast for nearly an hour before hauling it in. Eggs were harvested from the fish by Thai Fisheries officials as part of a breeding program … and they later planned to release it. But the huge fish was instead sold to local villages as food after it died in captivity. Did you know this animal is recognized as one of the largest freshwater fish ever caught?

A pensioner created some controversy when he landed the largest fish ever caught in the British Isles using rod and line. Joe Waldis managed to reel in a bluntnose sixgill shark that measured 12 feet, 9 inches long … and weighed 1,056 pounds! The animal was too huge to haul it aboard Mr Waldis’s boat off the coast of South-West Ireland. It was eventually towed to an estuary (ess-choo-wary), where it was taken by a forklift and weighed at a local quarry. The controversy arose when the shark was killed and then hauled ashore … that action was deemed necessary in order to verify the record. Many conservationists in the fishing community condemned the killing … saying the creature should have been released back to the sea alive. What do you think?

An angler named Guy Kitakoa (kitta-koe-a) was fishing off Kona, Hawaii in 2015 … when he caught a blue marlin that weighed an incredible 1,368 pounds (or over 620 kilograms)! You can see the huge fish in Mr Kitakoa’s picture. Look at how it dwarfs the fisherman … you can get a good idea of the sheer mass of the shiny-skinned critter, as its right fin appears to be sticking straight up. It took some 90 minutes of struggling with the marlin to finally bring it in. It later took seven men to transfer the fish from the 20-foot skiff to a larger yacht. In pictures from Waiopai (why-o-pie) Sportfishing Charters, you can see how five of the men used yellow measuring tape to assess the marlin’s dimensions of 12-feet long with a girth of 84 inches. Additional photos from the same source depict the animal with its bill closed with duct tape as some of the men examine its tail fin. And it later took a flatbed pickup truck to transport the creature away from the docks … just look at how the massive marlin fills up the flatbed. These are some of the true River Monsters ! That Wels Catfish caught in the Po Delta was unbelievable and what a great man and angler to let such a magnificent prize go free again to roam the waters and get even larger !

I went deep-sea fishing in Hawaii last year for fun. Not really expecting to catch anything. Only been fishing one time prior to this I was very excited when we caught a blue marlin. I had no idea what I was in for. Having no real experience or technique it took me about 40 minutes to reel in the 10 foot 300 pound beast. (Apparently that’s the about the size of a full grown male). It was really hard and I was completely exhausted. I have always loved and respected animals but regardless I still managed to gain a huge amount of respect for this animal. It was impossible not to be in awe watching it shoot in and out of the water. The sheer power of the thing.
Unfortunately one of the hooks was stuck in the fishes eye so we had to put him down. Sad but I got my photo op. Such a beautiful animal.
I had no idea that the tip of the nose was covered in these little razor sharp spikes. Cut my leg up pretty good just grazing the thing.

A TV personality caught a giant stingray on the Mekong river.... Yea an Expert Angler named Jeremy Wade did that, and the catch took hours to do and by the end of it the female ray gave birth to two pups; It wasn't Jeff Corwin I can say that for sure...

I was reading a fishing magazine back in 1992, I think, and an article in it was about a man catching a 14 foot Sturgeon in the Fraser or North Thompson River in B.C. Canada. He needed his dad's larger truck to pull it out of the water because his half tonne couldn't do it. I've never found any other mention of this anywhere, including National Geographic.
