Never realized this was a thing but it makes so much sense! I’ve definitely made drawings with “bad” tangents and been very confused as to why something just seemed a little off. Super helpful, thanks!!

It’s always the worst when you move something and it just creates a new tangent somewhere else

My art teacher would call these “edge sharing” which then we (as students) referred to as Ed Sheeran so when our teacher would say “you have too much Ed Sheeran in there” we’d know it was these he was referring too 😂

Can we just appreciate how good scoot cut his art so good that it doesn't look like it's cut.

The “space balls” and “quest for the Holly grail” references were IMPECCABLE m’lord!

Didn’t even realise I pretty much use tangent visuals with a lot of things like home, work or family projects. I thought it was just my perfectionism tbh 😂

People sometimes don’t realize how much thought artists put into their works

Totally right! And… hiiii!! I’m studying the masters just like you recommend- and I’m studying you! Doing my best to imitate your style while adding a bit of my own. Ink and watercolor are my favorite mediums, so I love watching you work. Thank you!

Four years of art school, and nobody taught me this. Or explained how it worked and why it was so bad. This is why I follow you. Your channel is both educational and artistically inspiring to me.

Hey scott, you’ve really inspired me to stop neglecting my traditional art after starting and eventually switching to digital a few years ago. I suppose i was scared that I’d forgotten how to draw without my iPad, maybe as soon as I tried an extensive piece it would look wrong or that it would be like my art a few years ago before I made huge improvements (which happened while I was using my iPad for all of my art.) Luckily after watching some of your videos I decided to have a good go and I’m having so much fun, I’d forgotten how much l absolutely LOVED drawing, sketching, painting etc with traditional mediums. It’s Been so long and the improvements I’ve made from even just a year ago is super rewarding. I’m still sort of relearning how to work with certain stuff and my art really isn’t all that amazing but Its been great. watercolours, which was a medium I was always terrified to use (acrylic was all the way for me!) have really started to grow on me, which I was motivated to try again after seeing the way you work with them. I know you probably won’t see this, but if you do, i just want you to know how grateful I am to have found your channel when I did and for all the videos you post. (I am also most likely on the spectrum and the simple things you mention really resonate with me and, along with your calming voice, brings me so much comfort. Sorry for the long comment but I needed to say it. Have a good rest of your day to anyone who reads this :)

I feel like in the second picture, the "bad" tangent could actually be beneficial in conveying a feeling of uncomfortable closeness between the two characters, it makes you "feel" that she's oppressively close to him with just the visuals alone.

I was self-taught in graphic arts and worked in the field for many years, but never heard this term. I feel like I knew this instinctively, but not why. It's so helpful the way you explain this. Also, I see how when you cut out elements and try out positions beforehand, it gives you an advantage. Really great suggestion!
