In his talk on the Indian Navy's remarkable role in the 1971 Indo Pak war, Cmde (Dr) Srikant B Kesnur brings out how the Navy essayed a series of daring operations that contributed significantly to the final outcome of the war.

Navies traditionally are called "Silent Service" as they operate beyond the horizon of people and remain invisible. Therefore, the missions and work of the Service tends to be unknown. Hence, the Navy's contributions to the 1971 war are not widely known or discussed.

In his talk, Cmde Srikant Kesnur will bring out how the war was the Navy's finest hour giving an overview of its daring operations in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. He will weave the main actions and lead character of the war to tell the story of how things unfolded at sea highlighting the bravery, tactical brilliance and strategic savvy that came to the fore.

He will also very briefly touch upon India's Naval and Maritime heritage as well as other notable aspects of the Indian Navy's growth and development since independence to give an all-round perspective to the talk.







Commodore (Dr.) Cmde Srikant Kesnur, an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, was commissioned in the Indian Navy in July 1986. In his 36-year career, he has had extensive experience in maritime operations, training and Professional Military Education, leadership, diplomacy and communication.



He has been the Captain of two frontline ships - an anti-submarine frigate INS Vindhyagiri and India’s biggest amphibious ship INS Jalashwa, and in addition, his tours of duty have witnessed several important assignments, prestigious courses and interesting tenures - at sea and ashore.



His other important appointments include being the Defence Adviser at the High Commission of India, based In Nairobi, Kenya, from Oct 2008 to Mar 2012, with Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Eritrea and Somalia as his area of responsibility as well as being Faculty/Dean of Studies, at different times, at the National Defence Academy, Pune, at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and at the Naval War College, Goa.



He has a PhD from the University of Mumbai apart from five postgraduate degrees in science and social sciences.



Dr. Kesnur has also been the Director of the Maritime Warfare Centre, Mumbai, and in addition, also the Officer in Charge of the Naval History Project.



He has been the Lead Writer and Chief Editor of twelve books/monographs and many journals for the Indian Navy. He has been involved with several academic, creative, and corporate outreach endeavors of the Navy.



He was conferred the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in the Presidential Awards in 2021, for distinguished services of high order.



After his superannuation in 2022, Cmde Kesnur has dedicated himself to the cause of spreading maritime awareness in the country through teaching, writing, talk shows and public lectures, video programs, and cinema. He describes himself as a Maritime Evangelist.
