This was fun to listen to while learning to knit. I did 5 rows in 45 minutes.
I LOVE your 1940’s scrappy striped sweater! Thats my whole goal in learning to knit.

The suggestion was made that in the Outlander series, Jamie should have been made to learn to knit. In fact, it was stated that he had learned to knit as a child, and expressed surprise that Clare had not also been taught to knit.

I can only recommend the knitting songs from the world wars CDs by Melanie Gall. Lots of great melodies with singalong-quality!

Great history overview, thank you! It's surprising how much is restricted to te last few centuries.

I hope that in my lifetime, we find textual references or archaeological evidence of knitting that goes back to the medieval era or before 🤞🤞.

Weaving has such a strong archaeological presence, from the Oseberg ship, to references in art and literature (Homer!) and LOTS and LOTS of loom weights dug up at sites. Knitting takes less equipment so it's more ephemeral, but I can dream.

What about the Norwegian knitters..and especially, the Selbu Star?

Very interesting. Weird that knitting seems to have sprung, fully advanced, suddenly in the 10th century.
