My whole strategy back in the day was to stack equip spells onto a single monster, only to find out years later that my whole strategy could be beaten by my opponent just flipping my card face down.

I used to equipe my Axe of dispair on my Obnoxious Celtic knight. Dude could only die to monsters with 1900 or less atk. But he had 2400 with the axe. I was the king of my schoolyard. Good old times.

The United We Stand and Scapegoat combo was one of my favorite combos back in the day

Axe of Despair is my favourite Equip Spell.

No nonsense, no conditions, just an extra 1000ATK. You can put it on any monster and it would turn into a powerhouse.

Plus the mental image of small cute monsters like Scapegoat wielding a giant gruelling battle axe is always funny

Malevolent Nuzzler and Black Pendant saved so many duels for me back in the day

my old combo was United we stand + Mage Power + Maha Valio. in addition to the eqiup spells effects, it gained 500 atk for each equip spell equipped to it.

Also United we Stand was the 1st equip spell which got banned

Equip and Field spells were intended to incentivize running a focused deck instead of a goodstuff pile but the boost was so irrelevant because the best monsters in a respective type would need 2-3 cards of buffs to match a single, completely alone La Jinn. It's the result largely of the first sets being completely arbitrary in the statlines they would give monsters.
When trying to solve "nobody is using Equip Spells" the design team assumed it was the Equip Spells that were the problem rather than the unbalanced stat spread of the types and so to solve the issue made equip cards more generic and with even bigger swings of stats. Which did make for some equip spells being playable but it further exacerbated the problem of making pile decks.

United We Stand onto Inaba White Rabbit was my stealth kill combo. Direct attacker who can basically be used to finish a duel when your opponent never expected it.

You should have added moonmiror sheild, now no matter how strong you opponents monster is, you’re +100 stronger

I’ll always love equip spells, especially when the anime used to consistently show the monsters equipped with them actually holding them. It was just so cool to me and made me use them all the more. Even to this day when I slap on a Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade for just a little extra boost, I like to imagine the monster grabbing the sword as it materializes and doing some epic pose.

Not to mention I totally used Mage Power a lot during the Arc V era since I could control 8 S/T cards at once. That + United We Stand = Yeah…I’m going for that OTK. Imagine taking an attack from an Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon that’s been boosted by 3 copies of Mage Power, 2 copies of United We Stand, a copy of Performapal Cheerful Mole in the monster zone, one in the Pendulum zone, a full board and to top it off a copy of Mystic Plasma Zone in the field spell zone. And I went games where I could consistently pull that off or close enough just because of the sheer amount of search I had with a Pendulum deck. Was it the most optimal way to play? No, but I found it hilarious when I could do so.

This took me right back to my old apartment complex in middle school. Just a roving gang of a dozen or so kids with Yu-Gi-Oh decks, constantly challenging each other to duels in between games of manhunt, slapboxing, and Budokai.

Nobody bought me cards and I didn't shoplift, so I had to get all my cards through playing for keeps, trading, or winning packs in tournaments. Made it all the way to quarter finals a few times with a deck built that way, even beat the grown ass man who was ranked #1 at our local comic book store one time.

I miss you, apartment friends and 2004 beatdown deck :'(

I remember using United We Stand and Mage Power with cards like Maha Vailo and Hayabusa Knight, just utterly destroying people at tournaments with those 4 cards

Funny.

In OCG 1999 before true power creep.

There were plenty of decks that ran those out of date equip cards. Because back then, due to limited monster card pool, and lack of strong attack point monsters.

Those equip cards will help in a pinch or get rid of walls. Since at that time. The monster with the highest attack for one tribute was Curse of Dragon and it could not beat over Giant Soldier of Stone or Aqua Mador.

Equips did leave a legacy, just this was early OCG only

It is hard to believe that equip spells are less helpful than turn one synergy .

The game is like a slot machine with how rough the opponents shuffle nowadays.

They might as well force players to share a deck with how broken the cards are now.

I learned early on that boosting attack is good, but building a tower is great. Well all my playground buddies were boosting their tax to insane 5 to 6 digit levels, I was sitting tidy behind a couple of solar flare dragons and enough burn to melt obsidian

Not a equip spell but I can remember that "Solidary" in a Blackwing deck was a nightmare the enemy Bora just had 2500 atk for free and he could even be special summoned
