The 2 types of Boredom: Heidegger

Superficial boredom and profound boredom are two levels of boredom identified first by Martin Heidegger, a German philosopher.

Superficial boredom is the most common state, which is the feeling people get while waiting for a train.
In these moments, people seek temporary distractions and will often turn to phones and social media. However, experts say it prevents people from reaching a profound level of boredom.
Entering a state of profound boredom, or malaise, is important because it creates an “existential discomfort” that challenges the sense of self, and can lead people to strive to better their situation.
How to make people sheep - distraction... just enough to avoid noticing the meaninglessness of their lives
Allow boredom... and notice it... and sit with it.
In my case a journal helps
Hunger = not necessarily a trigger for eating
boredom = not necessarily a trigger for distraction

Hi, I’m Conor Neill, I speak and write about Persuasion, the art of Moving People to Action. I have the privilege of being father to two great little daughters. I live in Barcelona, Spain.

Conor is a sought-after keynote speaker on Leadership. He teaches Leadership Communications at IESE Business School and is the President of Vistage in Spain, part of the world’s leading CEO organisation. As an entrepreneur, he has founded 5 companies, selling 16 private jets and building the 3rd largest fleet of private jets in Spain. What is Persuasion?
* What does it take to move people to action?
* What does it take to have impact when you communicate?
* How can I inspire the people around me to be the best version of themselves?
These are questions that I answer. I answer these questions with tools that work for politicians, business leaders, entrepreneurs and professors.

Where do I begin?

Speak as a Leader is an email driven course. You will learn to deliver speeches that are interesting and lively so that you can capture and maintain your audience’s attention.

TLDR; mindset shift from boredom as a negative emotion to boredom as a tool of self-awareness.

Your perspective changed how I viewed an import life lesson. A mentor of mine suggested I take a walk each day with no electronics. My belief was that this ask was centered around creating discipline, as he is a disciplined individual in many aspects and successful to boot. He demonstrated that belief through actions while sharing stories that drove his message home. I believed the primary benefit was in helping me create awesome patterns and achieve a state of discipline. My understanding of the meaning of discipline has changed.

Walks without distractions, on a cadence, provide the secondary benefit of building routine; the primary benefit is the allowance of space and time to experience my form of existential boredom. An allowance to think deeply about everything and nothing. An allowance to reflect on my shortcomings and vibrant futures that may be.

I now am working out how to put this thinking into action. Realization without action tends toward the sinister. I’m confident I know how to get there, yet worry short-term discomfort may override fervent will of change.

I appreciate this content and look forward to exploring your work further. Keep being you!

I really enjoyed listening to the two sides of boredom, which I can relate too.

Having gone through a difficult process for longer than I should have, but also knowing where I want to go, I find strength in the two sides of boredom.

I recommend getting further into Heidegger. In Being and Time he writes a lot about facticity, or “thrownness”. This is a way of saying that the past and history and who you are at a given moment absolutely DO matter for who you could become. Jordan Peterson is getting it wrong. As Heidegger understood we always already inherit a situation and circumstances which aren’t of our choosing, anything we can make of ourselves arises out of that.

Very good Conor. I think that boredom is linked to procrastination. Your message is crystal clear. If that time was used to do something that would have a positive effect on our goals then thats a better direction of our attention. Seeing the boredom as a way to grow and challenge yourself is a known way of reframing mind noise sometimes. This was just the message I needed to hear.

One of your best, Conor. Lot of wisdom in there.

However (There's that word that's almost as bad as 'but') you say: "Your past does not tell you who you are." I agree. It never did. Neither will your future.

"Who am I?" is also a question that can never be answered - though we often try to. Closest I can come to it is in those two words: "I am" - WITH NOTHING ELSE ADDED BEHIND IT. For we are the EXPERIENCER of this imagined self, the thinker not the thoughts, the feeler not the emotions, the decision maker, not the actions.

"Who could I be?" Now, we're talking about the character traits that we could discover, adopt and use - speeding up our evolvement towards - the manifestation of the greatest version of our grandest vision of ourselves, " What we are BEING and how we wish to BE, that's the important thing.

I experience this boredom, impatience and frustration while I do a water-only fast. It's not just the physical "hunger".
