СВОЙ - Russian Special Possessive Pronoun

The Russian word СВОЙ is one of the top 1000 words in Russian. In some cases it should be used instead of "my", "your", "his", "her", "its", "their". When exactly? You'll know after watching this video.

он сам не свой - he is not himself; e.g. He behaves strangely.
в своё время - when the time comes; at the right time; for ex: Ты узнаешь всё в своё время.
умереть своей смертью - to die a natural death.
он не в своём уме - he is not in his right mind; e.g. He is doing crazy things.
он свой человек - he is quite at home; e.g. He is a person that we can trust. For ex: Не стесняйся, здесь все свои люди.

How to work with my video lessons? At first watch it and repeat all Russian sentences out loud and record yourself to check your pronunciation. After watching put down all sentences you can remember. Watch the video again in 5-6 hours and correct the mistakes in your sentences if you have any. Do the homework that I usually give at the end of each lesson. Watch the video again in 2 days and make your own examples with the patterns used.

Thank you very much! I realize that Russian is much more precise than for example English. In the sentence "He loves his girlfriend", "his" could actually be interpreted as some other guy's girlfriend. ;-) and in the Russian sentence such an interpretation is excluded.

It also seems to me that Russians tend to shy away from using ANY kind of possessive pronoun when it's obvious that the object belongs to the subject of the sentence. For instance, in English, it sounds perfectly fine to say, "She was walking with her mother." But, I think a Russian would probably say, "Она гуляла с мамой." I don't even think they would say, "Она гуляла сo своей мамой." But, I'm not sure. I'm still learning Russian - but this is what I've gathered through my studies. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
